My Brake Won't Lock.

Keep this short.

Got a spanking new HS33, New pads and a VERY light grind. Spent a few days trying to break it all in (Rim was done a while ago) and it didn't change, Put some monty spray on as a last resort for a ride tomorrow, and it worked fine, until this morning when the Monty spray didn't even lock the brake.

Getting pretty annoyed as without a working rear brake, my confidence goes to pot. (obv)

Rim is sticky/filthy/mucky now.

What to do? does monty spray "break in"?

Cheers. (Y)

your using new pads on a rim with a old grind, old setup could have been contaminated and your using new pads on a rim that could be contaminated from your old setup. give the rim a regrind and and use sand paper on the surface of the new pads (just to remove the current spray/grime off them)

The grind has hardly been used, but it is VERY light, i had the Onza citrus pads before and they sucked.

rim? frame

Triatech Sport rim.

Zhi Z3 frame (with Tensile booster)

Well the answer is pretty obvious then, REGRIND.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that a dirty rim isn't going to work very well! Plus there is no use in putting a light grind on, either grind it properly or keep it smooth. I have always put the harshest grinds possible on my rims and redo them every 2 months or so.

I usually clean my rim before every ride as well, grinds can clog up very easily. Changing a tyre will cover the rim in crap, even dust will effect performance.

Also, what pads are they?

Try-all Croco pads, brown.

I'm planning on a hard grind, but can't do it until next week, just need something t hold tomorrow really. and yes a REGRIND is obvious.

Those pads are pretty hard wearing, you can put on a really harsh grind and they should still last.

You seemed to miss my other point of how important it is for the rim to be clean? Go and give it a good scrub with some soapy water, clean the pads if needs be and rinse off. If its still no good then apply some brake spray just before you got out riding.

Onza citrus work fine with a grind, they just disappear thats all.

As said clearly it's your grind/contaminated rim/pads.

Get the grinder on there and give it some angry loving.

Right, cleaning process complete haha, Got the sticky grubby stuff off with Lighter Fluid, then used hot soapy water, and finished off with disc brake cleaner. Sanded the pads slightly to get a clean flat finish, and it all seems to be alot better!

Still going for the deep heavy grind though, THe rim is going to be sore.

Cheers for all the help guys. (Y)

its a formula for disc brake pads and rotors, not rim brakes. it says on my can of disc brake cleaner (muc-off) not for use on rim brakes. isnt it all in the name of the product???

Well, no actually, its called "Brake Cleaner" for disc and drum brakes, clutches atc.

It's done the job perfectly :)
