Matt Vandart Posted August 5, 2010 Report Share Posted August 5, 2010 Right dudes, I got an Echo control and with 18/15 the chain is too long or too short and the maggie mounts wont line up. Also the axle bolts are pretty much hanging of the back of the drop out. To counter this I'm gonna either go up one tooth or down one tooth. raoulduke Posted August 5, 2010 Report Share Posted August 5, 2010 I've noticed a few people on this forum with a similar problem, and it's putting me off horizontal dropouts. From what I know after 18-15 most people use 18-16 so I guess that would be the best way to go, but it would be good to hear from somebody running 18-14, I imagine it would be good for street/BMX style riding. forteh Posted August 5, 2010 Report Share Posted August 5, 2010 Why not fit a spoke tensioner? I made a semi sprung fixed tensioner from a small aluminium bracket and length of plastic (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene to be precise ) cut as a chain guide; the natural flex in the guide keeps tension really well. Altering the rear teeth is a pretty drastic change to the ratio, this can be minimised by changing crank length though, if you drop to 18:16 running 165 cranks instead of 175 will keep the gearing pretty close. I ran a halflink which solved all my problems till about a month later and it snapped in half rendering my knuckles free from skin. Now I whack a brand new chain on, wait for it to stretch, then theres just about enough room to take a link out and slam the wheel towards the frame. Just gotta watch out for the tyre clearance. I think he means he runs the chain too long, then after a good few rides it will have stretched then he is able to slam it in after taking out a link? Mark W Posted August 5, 2010 Report Share Posted August 5, 2010 If it's too tight when the chain's brand new, you can put a few links from your old chain in the new chain which will help give it a tiny bit more length.
