Yeah, really helpfull post there :ermm:

Avoid XTR calipers, they are far too flexy for trials.

Avoid Shimano levers, they are also flexy. (Other members swear by XT or XTR levers because of the comfy shape and feel, but if you want maximum performance then Avid SD7 is the choice.

Avid calipers are great, very stiff. Deores are supposed to be good but I haven't tried them myself.

DO get a STIFF booster, will massively improve the hold of the brake. XTR carbon V booster is brilliant

DO get a linear brake cable, makes a massive difference to the stiffness and power of the brake.

DO get an SD7 lever as mentioned above

DON'T expect a V to work like a Magura, the bite will never be as good no matter what you do!

I found that any avid lever was the way forward, SD7 if you will use the speed dial adjustment. I use Avid Altimate arms, which are amazing but as Matt has said, any avid arms are very good as are the set -ups i've used with new Shimano Deore arms. A Linear slic cable is a must. As Matt has said a booster makes a massive difference to the hold of the brake, i found the actual vee brake post mounts flexed slightly without one, i use a Salsa carbon booster which has been excellent.

best set up = XTR lever and Avid Ultimate caliper with a linear slick.

setup thats much cheaper and pretty much as good = Avid SD7 lever deore/sd7 caliper and linear slick.

having said that Ive got like a 4 year old crappy shimano standard cable on my bike that seems fine to me...

I thought you didn't use a booster?

I have one next to me if you want it, Jake ;)

Everything's been covered really - vees are f**king awesome. Swear by Ultimate calipers, ran ultimate levers on my old one, awesome brake by the lever hurt my finger :( New bike has the set-up Rowan mentioned, and from what i remember it was beautiful, so comfortable and still really stiff. SD7's have really surprised me when ive used them too, such a good bit of kit for the tiny price tag.

The frame itself didnt as it was the old style wth the big CNC booster, and i don't think it was the adpators themselves, but more the fact the brake is mounted on a post extended away from the frame. The brake posts aren't exactly substantial and the flex seemed to come from these, with the booster mounted on top as it should be it removed all the flex in the brake.
