BlueSmokeyJoe
First, measure the length of the steerer tube and cut accordingly to the length you need. then, 1) Remove brake from old forks 2)Remove front wheel 3) Unscrew your top cap bolt and remove bolt/top cap 4)Slide off stem/bar 5)Slide out forks and remove the crown race. 6)Fit the crown race to the steerer tube on your new forks 7)Slot steerer tube through headset and attach stem and necessary spacers 8)Attach brake and wheel 9)Fit top cap and hey presto, go ride! Hope that helps Basically just follow that ^^^ not a lot more to say really. Just so you know, the crown race is the bottom most part of your headset Click me - Diagram. You will also need to fit a star nut into the the steerer tube of the new forks. Once that is done, just follow the steps I originally wrote! Has this cleared it up? Yeah the pic helped, but on my forks i have this clamp thing, like a ring with an allen bolt through it, and that seemed to stop the forks sliding down. When i tried to re-assemble them, this clamp wouldnt tighten, and just slided up and down. This made the forks all wobbley.(even with the stem and bars on)
Matt Burrows
How do you cut the steerer tube? like, using what? Thanks A serrated knife or even a sharp file will do it
ghostrider88
for tightening headset you use starnut-top cap system, not that bolt.

How many mm gap is there (once its all together) is there from the top of the steere tube inside the stem clamp to the top of the stem clamp? This, SECOND PIC DOWN. ghostrider88
just for you to feel better that it´s secured by more than one top cap bolt and two stem bolts

The top of the steerer tube is about half a centimeter from the top of the headtube. I havent missed any spacers. the forks were fine before i took them apart. i just dont know what to do to fit them back together, or to fit a new set of forks on. thanks for being patient with this

I dont know what i need to switch over from old to new forks/how to do that, how to fit a new star nut in new forks steerer tube. my god im so thick help
BlueSmokeyJoe
Upload a pic of this said 'ring with a bolt through it'? Surely this can only be the top cap??? I don't know what else to suggest Edit: He's typing, OBM to the rescue? Edited August 4, 2010 by BlueSmokeyJoe
Mark W
You don't need to fit a new starnut, they come pre-installed. Put the crown race from your old forks on your new forks. Make sure your bottom headset bearing is in the headset cup. Slide the forks up into the headtube. Drop your top headset bearings into the top cup (if they're not already in there). Put the bearing race in. Put the split-wedge in. Put any sort of dirt/dust cover type thing your headset might have on. Put the necessary amount of spacers on. Put your stem on. Put your top-cap and bolt on. Tighten the bolt up to the correct amount. Tighten your stem up. Go ride. If you're still having issues, grab a camera and upload some photos. BlueSmokeyJoe
Woops, didn't know star nuts came pre installed. My bad. Out of interest, is it all forks from Tarty that come with star nuts fitted (bar ones with internal threads ala TrialTech)

I don't know what else to suggest Edit: He's typing, OBM to the rescue? This clamp thing is like at the top of the steerer tube, and looks like it stops the forks from falling down. It seems to be in the same place as the crown Im sure it doesnt matter too much, as long as the top cap tightens the forks and stops them falling/snapping/wabbling its all good Is there anyone who can explain to me what exactly i need to do to swap to new forks? Thanks Sorry the clamp is at the BOTTOM of the steerer tube, not top. Edited August 4, 2010 by sandeeebeach219
