Bobo_Grimmer
Hello, I have a question for about handlebar geometry as i'm not sure what to spend my money on. At the weekend i had a go on a mod with a wider bar and it felt really nice. My bar i'm running at the moment is 27" wide Marin xc, (i'm not to sure of its full geo sorry), and they do feel a little small. So i'd like to get a wider set of bars and save on a bit of Weight at the same time. What i've done is narrowed my search to these few bars below as they are in my price range, and to the top of it too, and are kind of what i'm looking to get. My question is what should i be looking to go for out of these bars? I prefer natural riding and ride a mod. I'm not a really big awesome rider but i am getting better. I am fairly light and small too. (5'7 9 stone) Looking at these geo's things that i think of are: Does the upsweep and the total rise difference between some of these bars counter the each other in feel ect? If a shorter bar has the same total rise as a longer bar does that make it feel higher? I'm not sure if i should go for as longer bar as i can OR go for a slightly longer bar, than i have at the mo, but a better upsweep or total rise? Trialtech Sport Riser Bar £49.00 Width: 740mm (29.1in) Total rise: 88mm Upsweep: 10° Backsweep: 10° Weight: 311g V!Z Pro720 £59.00 Width: 720mm (28.5in) Total rise: 88mm Upsweep: 11° Backsweep: 10° Weight: 274g Monty 221 Ti Riser £65.00 Width: 690mm (27in) Total rise: 86mm Upsweep: 11° Backsweep: 10° Weight: 273g. Try-All Rage Bar '09 £62.00 Width: 730mm (28.75in) Total rise: 89mm Upsweep: 9° Backsweep: 9° Weight: 268g I hope I've made some sense with this post as I'm finding it hard to get my head around and type it out as well. Any help would be great, thank you, Shawn (the geo info i got from tarty) Edited August 3, 2010 by Bobo_Grimmer
dirt jumper jake
These. perfect bars. Monty 221 Ti Riser £65.00 Width: 690mm (27in) Total rise: 86mm Upsweep: 11° Backsweep: 10° Weight: 273g.
Matt Vandart
Out of those bars I would say jake is right for a mod. The viz bars are proper nice on a mod cut down to about, funnily enough, 27"/690mm Not a fan o trial tech on a mod and rage bars are just shit
aener
MONTY! I adored mine, but they started getting real flexy and creaky, and can't justify £65 on bars A lot of people found them too narrow, though.
cai
I'd go far the Tensile bars if I were you They're very light, a nice width, much cheaper than the bars you've 'narrowed down' and in my opinion have the perfect geometry. I've had both TrialTech and Monty Exclusive bars, and these Tensiles are far more comfy to ride with..
Dan6061
Trialtech's are actually perfect.
Bobo_Grimmer
well there's been an unexpected and interesting response so far. Thanks guys you've given me something to think about. I guess bars can be an individual's preference but me not having ridden meny mods it's a scary decision changing geo so your input is much appreciated. Dan6061
Bike set-ups are completely personal preference, so as you've seen, everyone will tell you different things. Have a think about what you think you could improve. You've already said that your bars feel a bit too narrow, and by the sounds of it they are! I had standard Onza 'flat' bars before, which were horrible. They were steel and were so solid! Also leave your hands in a horrible position. I then went to Zoo riser bars, which where a big improvement. They were wider, slightly higher, had a nice bit of flex to them, and best of all kept my hands in a much more comfortable position. Now I have Trialtech Sport risers, and they're perfect for me. Slightly higher than my Zoos were, and the general shape of them seems to suit me/my set-up nicely. Mark W
Does the upsweep and the total rise difference between some of these bars counter the each other in feel ect? If a shorter bar has the same total rise as a longer bar does that make it feel higher? Sort of - if you look at the Rockman Carbon bars and the Try-All Carbon bars, the Rockman bars are 10mm narrower yet have 2mm higher total rise - that's 'cos they've got a hell of a lot of upsweep which obviously places the tips higher than the Try-All bars. To give it a comparison, the Born Carbon bars are the same geo as the Try-Alls but 10mm narrower, meaning they have 2mm less total rise. What I'm getting at is that you've got to take it all into account really. A lot of upsweep might make a bar feel as high/higher than another longer bar with less upsweep, but you will notice the extra upsweep and if you're not a fan of it it's not really worth going for. I ran Trialtechs and Try-All Carbons on my mod and both were pretty much perfect. The Try-Alls have the best shape out of any bar out there but they obviously are pretty expensive. It is worth remembering you can always cut them down a bit anyway, although do it bit by bit simply because you can take off more if you want to, but you can't put more back on! Krisboats
MONTY! I adored mine, but they started getting real flexy and creaky, and can't justify £65 on bars A lot of people found them too narrow, though. Indeed, i love my monty bars. Although mine and boumsongs flexed a bit and both creaked rather noticeably too. Boumsongs trialtech bars are rather flexy too, far more than my monty ones. Bobo_Grimmer
Well thank you everyone. you've all given me some cool stuff to think about. i think for the money i have to spend i have made a choice. I roughly measured the total rise of the bar i have at the moment and it's around 65mm ish. and as i said before they are 27" long. I wanted something a bit longer and with a little more rise as i think that will give me a better cockpit while on the back wheel. i like the sound of the monty ones and the tryall ones. Only thing is the monty's are the same length as the ones i'm running at the moment so they are out. And the tryall ones i just not 100% on plus they are getting to be a little expensive for me, as i have other things to buy that i won't go into here, SO i think i will go for the V!Z Pro720. They have the same Geo as the monty ones but are slightly longer which is what i'm after. Well this is my thought's so far. i might be persuaded different yet though i guess... I was looking through them all earlier and saw those ones. They're definitely going to be my next set of bars. I might need to re-spray them though, the graphics are a little over the top! Not according to Muel..... Viz pro 720's are really nice, they dont look so garish in real life Kris but they can creak a bit but strangely the creak went after a while.
