im looking to buy a sat nav at the moment. looking to spend about 100 quid ish, but can stretch abit more. initially i was looking to buy a sat nav and a road angel to pick up the speed cameras and the speed traps, but now decided i may aswell have one unit that does it all.

ive never owned a sat nav and know virtually nothing about them. does anyone have any advice as to what is a good one?

found this one link the reviews look good but i really dont know how it compares.

help please :)

my dad has a tomtom one i recommend one of these as they are only about £100 and covers western europe it is really easy to set up and as far as i know you can set it up to find speed cameras and warn you when you get near. also you can downlaod all the voices and road updates

its £115 from argos and has UK & ROI and europe maps

the link :

Depending on how much you care about speed camera locations, you might like something that you can update via your PC or that updates automatically over the mobile network. A member of my family is facing his sixth speeding ban and has recently bought a TomTom Live for £140, and pays a monthly subscription to keep it bang up to date.

A decent, separate camera detector is the best option if you can afford it IMO.

Only ever tried one, but my ~£170 Garmin Nuvi 1380t (or someshit) does a good job. Its widescreen gives a nicer, clearer view than the squarer ones. Garmins also have (imo) a better mounting system to Tomtoms.

To be honest I'd just pop into halfords and have a read through what the benefits of each model has. Tomtom and Garmin have good reputations, cant go wrong with either really.

Only real place to buy them would be Halfords too.

Be weary of places like Argos, for many of the sat navs they sell are branded as TomTom's but are not actually produced by TomTom. Almost in the same fashion that they sell Raleigh bikes which are exclusive to Argos, and that no Raleigh dealer can obtain.

Price wise, Halfords will always win too. Check them out on their website and you can get a bit of discount by reserving it online, and you don't have to talk to a spaz in the store.

Do you have an android phone? if so, just install the latest google maps and it'll also give you google navigation - which is sat nav over the top of google maps. I've been using it recently instead of my tom tom. Not quite as good yet, but they seem to be updating it fairly often.

I use the same system with my iPhone, and would imagine that it or an equivalent are available on a Blackberry too so if you're on any of those you'll be sorted.

Doesn't do the camera stuff though

+1... Google maps nav is brilliant. You can get into your car, Google the postcode of the place you're going to and then hit navigate to have it to take you there. Use it on my Desire all the time.

I've got Tomtom on my old phone, which I keep just for the satnav. It works fine - however it would be very useful if there was live traffic updates. I can check motorway traffic on my current phone (google maps on iPhone) but it would be nice if the same device would do both. Might try Tomtom for iPhone if I'm ever feeling flush.

I have a desire and use this for my sat nav also, but it always crashes the first time I open it. Once I restart it, its absolutely fine. Does yours do this?

That post is back in April, I'm not sure what's happening with Google Navigation for iPhone but I'm not holding my breath. On the other hand, TomTom for iPhone became a lot more affordable today...
