zoster
acs freewheels are cheap. how are they in terms of durability/skippage? thanks! (i tried looking for this both here and on otn, but with no success)
mr ailsbury
If you take them apart and clean the grease n stuff out then put threadlock in the lockring thread before you use them they're fine. When I used to run then I did that and they lasted for ages and ages.
Balls Deep trials team
there cheap and good just make sure the lock ring doesnt come loose
charliemod
there are less engagement points so it takes longer for it to react and turn the chain. people don't like them because they want to pedal as soon as possible and it will kind of keep you balanced in the way that you can make quick adjustments in to which direction you need to go. (hard to explain the last part)
andyb
i thought they were rather wank. had 2 a long time ago and they lasted about 2 weeks each. Spend more and get a tensile.
zoster
thanks for all the answers! about the last post, i did have a tensile, and lasted about 1 year. it skipped hard a few times, one spring has broken and two pawls are in usable shape (they're tip has chipped off). a local dealer has the echo tr at a fairly good price (around 26gbp), but not on stock atm. i guess i can wait.. otherwise, i can get a rockman 72 click for 20gbp, but each post i read about these said they skipped quite a lot... Muel
They really are rather poor. I had one once, only lasted a month. In that time I rebuilt it about 4 times and ended up welding it shut. Then I got a Tensile 60 click, which lasted me 2 and a half years. (I kept transferring it across my bikes). Actually I have another Tensile now. It's 3 years old but has hardly been used. Bronz
i thought they were rather wank. had 2 a long time ago and they lasted about 2 weeks each. Spend more and get a tensile. No way, I had exactly the same. Went through two in about 4 weeks, upgraded to a tensile and yeah, fine ever since I also had a mate shred an ACS just two weeks ago, also upgraded to tensile. ACS are pretty poor in my experience…
konstant
+1 for Tensile. My Rockman 72 looks nice but has been skipping since the day I bought it. Skips several times each and every ride. Avoid.
Bronz
Well I'm actually running an Echo TR on a totally new bike. Great freewheel but I'm looking to upgrade to the SL after hearing all the hype.
CalopS
Just get an SL. there only £60. Its such an important part of your bike. Its worth spending money on it.

Its worth spending money on it. seems that the sl and tr freewheels are coming this week. is it worth the double price of the sl over the tr? i didn't hear anything bad about the tr, and i don't mind the fewer engagement points since i do street-trials so i wouldn't like too much drag from the extra engagement points EDIT: i just realised i posted this in "media". sorry about that! please move ... dann2707
Didn't ride by acs for more than a few days before I upgraded to a tensile 60 so I can't really comment on its durability. But I do think it feels pretty bad in terms of the engagement whereas the tensile you can actually feel the engagements every time. Love the sound of tensile too, but I just wish it was a little louder.

Tom Canham
I had an ACS, there pretty bad. Mine fell apart after a few rides. My mate got an echo TR, and there very good from what he has said.

My mate got an echo TR, and there very good from what he has said. Yep, mine was pretty bad too. I had it for about a month and it just went all faulty so i got an Echo TR for around £40 and it was well worth it. In my opinion, it is a very good, reliable and durable freewheel. zoster
yeah...sorry for the bump... turns out the echo fw's aren't coming too soon. some problems with the Chinese firm honoring their orders. i can just wait (with my now 4-pawl tensile) or get a rockman. i can get the 72 version for aprox 20 quid and the 108 one for about 25. good prices, i know, but i don't want to throw my money away if that's really the case. anyway, is the 108 version stronger/weaker/the same as the 72 one? i don't really think i need the extra clicks since i am doing street-trials sith a ffw and i don't appreciate the drag, but if it means less skips, then i'll pay the small differance. thanks for the backup
Otacon
Haha, i love all the bitchiness about ACS freewheels, they are the shizz man, i'm running one on my stock, i stuck it on the rear though i did, 16tooth one, running 18:16, as mr ailsbury said, clean them out and shit and they'll be fine. Well, i built this wheel years and years ago and its still working completly fine. Don't think it's ever skipped on me. dann2707
take it apart and take some grease out and / or sharpen the pawls. All of a sudden the sound has doubled now! It's ace, a really nice clicky tinny sound. I'm guessing it's embedded...or broken Going to go SL soon though whenever they come back instock
