Frame/mount Cracking.

Hey guys.

Okay one of my mates keeps arguing with me that bashplates will not crack the frame, or crack the bashplate mounts. So simple question, if you try bashguarding a wall, and hit it too hard a few times, will it crack the frame/mounts. Just to try and prove me wrong, he went and smacked his bike of the wall, and apparently nothing happened, He didn't check though, so yeah back to the question if hit to hard too many times will the bashplate crack either the mounts for the plate or your frame.

EDIT: It even says on tarty, its to protect the chain, and if used wrong, is not covered under warrenty, It says something like that.

Cheers,

Kieran.

If you hit something hard enough, inevitably it's going to give. People do say that it can snap frames though :S

The weld where the bash mount is affixed to the downtube of the frame gives a massive stress raiser, a build up of force, along this very small area. This can cause frames to crack....and as is widely known aluminium will fatigue and snap under ANY load as long as it is applied enough times theoretically.

Well i dont know about snap, just crack lol

And cheers Alex, you helped me alot, hopefully this will prove my friend wrong.

or maybe he will just bash his bike off the wall again :giggle:

No worries, luckily bashplates are slowly dying out for good reason....

BIU's just a dirtry disipline on the street, looks messy, sounds horrible and causes a lot of damage to walls, but companys are still designing street frames with bash's is wierd. Fine if its a learner bike, but if you know what your doing then there is no good reason to have one.

If you land on it hard, all of the force of your landing is put through those three relatively small areas, into the downtube/chainstays.

The smaller the surface area a certain force is spread through, the more pressure it will exert.

Edit: Meaning if the mount is on a large gusset which is welded to the downtube, it's less likely to crack than one with a small/no gusset.

A frame won't crack just because it has the mounts - but it does dramatically increase the CHANCE of it cracking there.

The old polished T-Mags were terrible for it as they did not feature a gusset like the one pictured above (clearly Onza learnt from that mistake!). I think it's more of a question of bad design. A bashplate is there specifically to be bashed instead of the frame, it wouldn't be doing much good if it still caused the frame to break! If well designed the bashplate should prolong the life of the frame; even if when the frame finally fails it's at the bashplate mounts, the main point of including one is to extend the frame's life.
