coyoteboy
So I've thrown together a 26" build and was going to use my old D521 rim on the rear but then realised these fandagled (new to me!) 4 bolt maggie mounts require a slightly wider rim. Like miles wider. So time to add a rim to the build price, not a lot but more than I'd hoped so would like to keep it cheap but not poor quality. Over at tarty I see the Alex DX32 and a couple of others in the 30-ish quid realm, posted - which of these would you pick? As a heavy chap and not overly practiced I'm likely to give it some abuse while I get back into the swing of things, but I don't want a tank-track weight on the rear. Advice welcome, especially on other sources of parts - I know tarty are good but I like choice too. All my local shops are road/MTB oriented and basically told me to buy from tarty Cheers all! AdamR28
The DX32 is a wicked rim, pretty tough, not too heavy, holds a grind well - make sure your hub is 36h though!
TROYston
Holds a grind for about a year. I had the mod version for this, Wasn't the widest of rims, nor the lightest, but the material is great.

Put 18mm holes in there and its about the same weight as a tryall h0le Think bigman said your safe to go up to 22mm holes in a dx32 without killing it too much. Holds a grind like nothing else IIRC bikedock were selling 26" 32 hole predrilled dx32s, not sure if theyre still available though. edit: dont have them now Edited July 16, 2010 by forteh

Yup I'm a 36 hole'er and they all seem to float around the +-50g mark anyway. Will get it ordered tonight so I can play next week! Not sure I'd go down the drilling it out myself route, maybe if I find its weight is a particular problem but the benefit of a nice wide rim I suppose is I don't need a DH specific tyre of 1kg proportions to save the rim. It depends if you feel the weight saving is worth it, putting the holes in doesnt significantly weaken it and any weight saved from the rear rim/tube/tyre can make a huge difference to how the bike feels. The width of the rim is only really there for tyre stability, depending on how heavy you ride, chances are youre still going to need a hefty tyre or tube. I personally run a 2.4" rubberqueen with a standard inner tube and have only pinched it once, I dont ride particularly harshly though
that NBR dude
If you ever did want to save some weight on it, I've got a 36 hole DX32 sat in the garage. Tried to sell it a few times with no luck, so if you wanted a spare rim to practice on, you can have it for postage cost.

isitafox
Would some tensile offset maggie mounts not do the trick?

coyoteboy
Ive got a tryall 36h you could have?? 15 posted? alot wider then dx32 and slightly lighter Cheers for the offer (both of you) - let me nip home and see whether the frame/brake combo will fit a 47?! wide rim, if not I might take comic book guy up on his offer. Any/much damage to either of those rims or a million grinds on them? Cheers

Akira_Shock!
DX32s were the shit back in their heyday several years back. The quality of the build by Alex is better than Jetset's rims (Koxx, Onza, Viz etc.)
