cai Posted July 13, 2010 Report Share Posted July 13, 2010 Got this freewheel today, along with a BB and Tensile Bars, brand new from TartyBikes. Just spent the last hour fitting everything. I screwed the freewheel onto my cranks by hand, then when the cranks were on the bike I slowly rotated the cranks forward so that the freewheel was on nice and tight. Then pedelled around my garden to make sure the freewheel was tight. Then I went up on the back wheel and pedal kicked - it felt weird for some reason! Almost like my chain was loose (the chain isn't loose) so straight away i stopped. I had a look at everything and saw that when you put pressure on the pedals the outer ring of the freewheel (the part with the teeth on) moves slightly to the side I can actually wobble this outer ring abit with my fingers.. Is this normal for Sl freewheels?? The last thing that I'm wanting to do is f**k up my brand new freewheel by riding on it if it shouldn't be doing this. The only thing I can think of is that the lockring may be loose, butas its up against the crank arm and I don't have the Echo freewheel tool to take it back off again, I can't check it. Shall I send my crank (with the freewheel on) back to Tarty so they can check it out? trials owns Posted July 13, 2010 Report Share Posted July 13, 2010 i have got this problem on my tensile 60 click but mine skips as well,i think because of this, my lockring is fully tight but that didnt stop the outer from wobbling? i would love to find out what is wrong and fix it. You need to do a few powerful pedal kicks before the threads are nice and tight. Just pedaling along won't get the freewheel tight. As above, it's nothing to worry about. The bearings and in particular the sealing does seem pretty poor on SLs. Mine has quite a bit of play side to side after a few months. My advice is to keep on eye on it and as soon as you notice the bearings feeling rough then lube it with chain oil. Oh and try not to fall into water and get the freewheel submerged The only thing that spraying it with GT85 will achieve is to break down what little grease and lube is in there already! You can use it to flush through if it is rough with dirt inside, but you should always relube it after with some oil (Finishline wet chain lube is ideal) otherwise the bearings will be running dry Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tensile ffw's are greased when new which tends to stick the pawls up and causes them to skip whereas the SL's are only thinly oiled. A good soaking complete or opened up should sort the Tensile out for you. As for the SL I gaurantee that tartybikes will say there's nothing wrong if you ring them as they are almost indestructable, I would have thought it is just down to the tightness of it!
