TomG
Hello guys. I'm looking for tips, I suppose, or any kind of guidence. I used to trial about a year ago, but I gave up in the end. I have always had a problem with motivation and I just couldn't learn anything. I admit I didn't really ride that much as the only places I could learn anything where near my friend who lived a little bit away and the struggle of biking a 20" really put me off. My bike was cheap and tacky, so I suppose that made it harder at timse. I ended up selling it on eBay and carrying on with my life. However, lately I've been watching trials videos and really wanting to give it another go, but this time as a 26". I don't have the money to spare but I am saving. What I want to know is, what keeps you going? How did you get your self to want to go through with it? Now don't think I don't want to do it. Biking has always been a passion of mine, and it's the only sport that has really stood out to me and made me want to get up and do it, but I just had a real problem with it. For me a big problem was the publicity. Yeah, everyone thinks trials bikes look cool and watch as they walk past, but it really ticked me off when I'd be struggling with the abserloute starting point and people would be asking you to "do tricks" and such. It really didn't help that I had to watch my friend be able to do a lot, whilst I was there struggling to get my front wheel up. PeanuckleJive
Having awesome guys to ride with helped me a lot when I got back into it, I bet if I hadn't found myself riding buddies then I wouldn't have kept at it I gave my bike a rebuild too, Fixed everything and greased everything up so I knew it was in top condition before I started Then just push yourself, give things a go and push to learn stuff, If you keep at it and start nailing moves you'll realise the potential you have and really start to enjoy it! Jamie_Trials
Set your self a goal, say to yourself, i will do it unless you become disabled or die. Also listening to music sometimes helps me and encouragement from other trials riders.
LordMersey
I find videos help. The latest of Martyn Ashton is a real inspiration I think. I know how you feel about your mate I had the same problem but that just made me want to ride harder and better.
Luke Rainbird
I ride to have fun. If I go out and have fun on a bike then I'm going to want to do it more. Easy.
Revolver
I ride to have fun. If I go out and have fun on a bike then I'm going to want to do it more. Easy. Similarly, don't ride if you're not enjoying it. Instead, try to remember what it is that you enjoy about it, or think about new ways to enjoy it. TomG
Thanks for the replies. I can see what you all mean. I hadn't tried listening to music, nor had I tried getting involved in other trials bikers. I did meet a few, who I think where members here, once but I felt as though I didn't belong there because I was so newb to the sport. I will deffinatly take these into account if I start again! Also that Martyn Ashton is crazy! I had never of him.
dannytrialskid
I ride every day, learn new things every day, watch videos everyday, learn from those videos everyday. In other words, I do everything to do with trials everyday, learn, watch, ride, teach. Best way IMO.
chris4stars
maybe make some videos of yourself riding? - makes it easy to see improvements in riding - depending on where you upload it, you can get some positive feedback and compliments from others - camera comes out, some people have a natural want to push themselves that little bit more! - after your first one is done, its a benchmark - somthing you look forward to improving on in the next at the end of the day though, if youre not enjoying riding in view of the public, find other spots or practice in quieter areas untill you feel comfortable? anusthegreat
Doing trials is not about forcing yourself. Big sport, championships and stuff liek that, - yeah. But not like everyday riding. I quit trials four years ago b/c of some reasons. Didn't feel nice, really. Started over a few months ago and I do still ride better than some kids who started like one-two years ago. Unfortunately, I can't afford riding everyday, it's only about two-three times a week due to the lack of spare time. I feel like I want to spend tiem with my friends riding bycicles. Also, it's never too late to try something new. I've just finished setting up my second fixie bike <3 and enjoying those epic trips in the evenings, when you're tired of everyday routine. I also think about building an expensive project of a street bike during this winter to be ready until next summer.
Joe O'Connor
I have a similar problem to you. Ive got no one to ride with (Closest are a 30min drive away). Long distances to get to somewhere to ride etc... My mates do flatland and other BMX stuff and its hard to keep up with them on rides. So Im getting a 24" to be able to do both! modifiedridah2k9
The only thing to keep youself motivated is your mates, i wouldnt be saying this right now if i didnt have them, cos i wouldnt be trials biking. Thats the biggest and best tip i can give you is ride with your mates
Luke Rainbird
The only thing to keep youself motivated is your mates, i wouldnt be saying this right now if i didnt have them, cos i wouldnt be trials biking. Thats the biggest and best tip i can give you is ride with your mates Whilst I wouldn't totally agree with this, it starts to head towards another point. Trials to me has almost become more of a lifestyle than a sport. Yeah I've got a life outside of trials, but through the sport I've met so many awesome people and made a huge number of absolutely wicked friends that I wouldn't have done otherwise. I've been to new places, tried new things and to some extent it's changed the way I look at/go about things. Whilst I'm sure some day will come that I'm no longer actually riding trials, the community and general way things are done will be around with me for a fair while yet... (Hell, just look at the number of non-riders still on the forum!)
Muel
I always say if you're having to try to stay motivated, then what's the point? If you wanted to ride enough you'd just do it....
TomG
@chris4stars I like that idea, I would deffinatly make some progress videos. I always say if you're having to try to stay motivated, then what's the point? If you wanted to ride enough you'd just do it.... I've always had a problem with staying motivated with anything and everything, trials is the only thing that really appeals to me. Other than that nothing else appeals to me in life, apart from cars which I cannot afford. I see what you mean but it's hard to explain in a context that other peoeple can understand. I think overall is, due to me being a really lazy and insecure person before, I never really gave it my full go and hardly went out at all. Nowadays I'm more up for things which is why I think I should give it another go. Thanks for the feedback, y'all.
