Tar

I am currently running a smooth rim and want abit of tar on it to help. I tried putting the tar on the rim and none comes off on to the rim ( i think it to hard ) is there anything i can do to it, to make it so it goes on the rim. I have allready tried rubbing it on a ruff serface then trying this also didn't help.

any suggestions welcom.

I had the rockman greens on they were perfect didnt need no tar, but because they only have standard backings so the brake felt spondgey. So went back to the TNN greens as they have the CNC backings and the brake doesnt feel spondgey anymore, but the pads are a harder compound and not stickey so i feel safer with abit of tar on.

I stopped using my rockman greens for the same reason! I've regretted it massively ever since!

BUT your wrong about one thing, the flex doesn't come from the backing! It's the actual compound that squashes on them  I think I might just have to live with that though

I just used to keep a small lump in a small 'baggy' in my pocket...

Found that used to soften it up enough to put a small line around the wheel!

Do you not think if you were to take it out of your pocket while the police came past, they would think it suspicious somebody taking a small bag out of his pocket with a small lump of a black rock

Yeah this will soften it up, or another way to do it, is flip your bike upsides down, then spin the pedals to spin the wheel, and lightly push the lump of tar on the rim, then push a little harder, stop the wheel every now and then to check you havnt put too much on. If you have put too much on and it rubs, pull your brake in a wee bit so the wheel can still move, and cycle for a decent distance, it will spread the tar around the rim so it doesn't stick/Rub.

Hope i helped mate. :)

It depends on the tar. Some kinds will be brittle and hard making it difficult to apply and not improving brake performance. Other kinds are softer, very sticky and will last ages.

I'd say you just need to find another kind. Some say that the best tar can be found on the roof of Monty's warehouse in Spain.

What tar are you using. I tried using some that I picked up from some newly laid road and had the same trouble. Then got some felting tar off a friend that's a roofer. The stuff they use for flat roofs and works a treat. Spin the wheel and softly (I stress softly) push onto the rim. It doesn't need a lot to work. I'd also advise grinding the rims. If your pushing your riding your bike will have dents and scratches all over it so who cares about how it looks.

Having a dirty black smudge all around your rim doesn't? hmmm pie

Well it all depends on the colour or your rim, mine is quite dark so tar is less noticeable then a grind would be. But fair comment (Y)
