Brake

Hey guys,

I have been looking at some good brakes, and im stuck between a few, but my question is: Is an Avid SD7 vee brake powerfull, good bite etc?

I like the Shimano XTR alot! but this Avid is cheap, and my uncle has told me that shimanos are hard to set up and break alot, and that avid sd7's are good. So any opinions? Does it break to easily, is it strong? can it last a long time? With the right pads is it loud!

What are good pads to use it with?

Thanks alot!

I'm afraid this is what stood out to me...

Why do you specifically want it to be loud? Most people find it an unfortunate, but unavoidable side effect.

I ran one for a fair while - I liked it a lot - but not many others did. Can be very good if you set it up right - but vee's just don't feel nice to a lot of people.

Because a loud brake is usually synonymous with a fast biting brake. It seems most people would prefer loud noise and fast action at the expense of a slow performing brake which is a lot quieter.

I know i find it reassuring being able to hear my brake working when i'm about to do something that i might get hurt on.

That's not my point. He asked would it be loud - not would it be snappy.

I know damned well that the two go hand in hand but the way the post was worded implies that the noise is the more desired factor.

Ermm.... yeah, he did?

Most people go "it's loud, it must work". It's easier to ask if it's loud than to ask if it works as people vary in their opinion of what a working brake is. I just put the two questions together.

To be fair though i've not actually seen many vee brakes that are loud, mostly due to the rigid pad retention system. With regards to the XTR question, it's not that the XTR is a bad vee brake, but it's a much more complex design that is prone to becoming wobbly and needing more in the way of attention than standard vee arms (like the sd7's), much in the same way the avid arch rival brake always seemed to cause more issues in the long run than it ended up solving.

Loud brakes are amazing, saves buying a bell or a Dixie horn :P

So long as you have a quiet (disc) brake on the front to contrast, I agree.

Not so much agree, but I think a loud brake is bareable if you don't have to hear it all the time.

Loud brakes are annoying if you get little 12/13 year olds riding around holding there brakes on thinking its cool.
