Oldskooltrials
use a chain whip , or a old peice of chain Surely you can only use the chain method for removing fixed sprockets as mentioned in the video?
Franksx2005
Is there an easy/best way to get my freewheel off without damaging the threads on the crank arm as a removal tool wont work? Strip as much of the freewheel off as possible, then cut some groves in the remaining metal to see if you can get a hammer and screwdriver to undo it. That won't work as it's a freewheel, it's way too tight. I've done this before, you have to unscrew the lockring, remove all the bearings, springs and pawls, then clamp the inner bearing race that screws onto the crank arm in a vice, slide a pole over the end of the crank arm and use that as leverage to get it off. I thought id have to do something like this but wanted to make sure before i started! I think i will replace it with an Echo sl freewheel as from what i have read they are the best? rab shropshire
like muel said. because someone has taken the removal tabs off, you need to completely take the freewheel to pieces until you are left with just the bit that screws onto the crank, then clamp it in a vice, slide a large pole over the crank arm and turn it. The freewheel came like that on the bike, ive had it from new. Not sure why as there is plenty of clearance between freewheel and BB? Thanks for the advice. Oldskooltrials
Just been been round the father in laws workshop and got it off. Pretty easy once i started turning things the right way! Knocked lock ring off with hammer+chisel, removed all the parts then clamped in vice where the pawls would sit. Big scaffold pole on the crank and off it came no problems Thanks for the advice.
