A lot of lightweight frames do have very thin downtubes now, so it's not much of an additional weight penalty to increase the lifespan of your frame. Like with Stan's Sky, because Stan only really rides natural on that bike it's subjected to knocks from sharp rocks and edges - I've seen about 2-3 in the past few weeks that would've probably ended that frame if it hadn't been on there.
