Hey all

I've started saving for a dedicated trials bike, an onza T-Pro 2010, so should have that by christmas.

In the mean time I hope to do trials on my 26" hack bike. Its an old Giant Boulder frame which I have sprayed and then turned single speed, running a 22-12 ratio. I have some Scwalbe Crazybob 2.5" tires and a downhill stem, bars and headset. I also have a set of rock-shocks forks on. Can I practice trials on this, and what sort of stuff is possible on a non trials-specific bike. I can already do bunny hops, pivoting, wheelies and a pedal kick of sorts.

Thanks

James

P.S Ill se if I can get a pic put up at some point

I'd think about changing your gear ratio slightly. I remember when i had to run 22-12 for a couple of days, it was such a ball-ache even now when I'm running 20-15 it feels a little too high.

But apart from that you should be fine. You can ride trials on any bike (Y)

Hi,

I started trials riding a MTB which I used for 6 months. It's harder to progress but if you do, then with a trials specific bike you will find some things very easy. I was able to climb 85cm with the front wheel and there are some other things you can try ;)

hi,

this is a similiar case for me really. try doing skinnies on walls then dropping off. if you can pivot try endo turning off a wall then lift your front wheel off the wall before your back wheel hits the ground. its just all practise.

Hope this helps.

one of my favourite tricks is hopping on the front wheel, try an endo then hop on the front wheel. 180 endoes, wheelie in a circle, pedal hop onto curbs, keep practicing back hops, try fakies. just look at some trials videos and see what they do and try to change what there doing to make it a bit easier, this will then teach you to be creative aswell ;)

I started for a few month on my 19" Specilized Hardrock. I had a few big bricks that I'd practise sidehopping on and pioting one to the other.

Also, watch this - http://vimeo.com/3619353

Goes through all the basics and more.

Thanks for that, awesome video, I think I've herad of that guy before

As stated above, you can ride trials on anything! I started out on a Giant Boulder 500 years ago! About 10 to be exact! It was fine for gettting the basics, then I moved onto a DDG Shooter which was still pretty reasonable!

Good to see your giving it a shot, and not just moaning you cant do it because of the bike!

Other than a few words of encouragment, Im affraid I cant be of much more use! :)

Thats a link to some fella recomending a Giant Boulder back in 1999! So they've been making them for a good few years!!! As everything else does, im sure the frame have evolved over the years, so yours probably isnt as basic as mine was! :)

Well mine seems to work well for "trials" compared to the years previous model which my mate had but they seem to be moving more and more towards the xc end rather than street and recreation nowadays, but the new ones actually look quite nice for a budget bike.
