Tux07
ok i'll start by saying this is not a debate about which os is best. since the recent firmware update playstation will not be able to run linux (standard on the slims) now i know sony are being sued over this at the mo (see attached .pdf) and obviously if there are any other linux users on here you will know that we can find ways to make it run on anything lol but having this feature was not only a key selling point for many people but a necessity as a second hand ps3 was a cheap alternative to a blu-ray capable pc my opinion, the ps3 is a GAMES console and partially a media server/centre if i want you use a linux i'll boot up my laptop or desktop etc i am ok with sony's decision to remove it as people were hacking full games to the ps3 harddrive and similar hacks (none of which i am capable of nor condone) so whats your opinion on this must dash to work, i look forward to peoples opinions when i get backgov.uscourts.cand.226894.1.0.pdf Edited May 25, 2010 by Tux07
anzo
An awful decision by Sony - they're punishing legal Linux users by doing this, however it will do little do effect illegal uses. It's the whole Sony/Microsoft/Apple or whatever company wording; 'this update isn't compulsory' - a term Sony are using now. However, as we all know, without updating you cannot sign in to the Playstation network, so you cannot play online. Any illegal users will simply not upgrade, develop a downgrade solution or simply find another way around it. It will do nothing but effect the genuine users. They're playing themselves down the market - an alternative OS on a games console was considered a breakthrough, something to boast about, however they're stopping it with little benefits to themselves. Waste of time if you ask me.
Dr. Nick Riviera
Sony are still pissing money up the wall like there's no tomorrow.

Personally I see it as a good thing - they must be spending a lot on R&D in a time when most manufactures can ill afford to survive in the electronics market. aener
I'm undecided. I put yes - 'cause I think it's kind of shit for them not to let you do what you want with your console, but I'm not so sure now. I don't know about this - does it enable you to dual boot between Linux and the PS3 OS? If it does - fair enough - but if not - I say no, they shouldn't bring it back. If it's an update that stops you playing online, and you can't boot in to the PS3 OS anyway, it's not a problem. Just don't update, as you can't play anyway. Rebelistic
I didn't know about this but it sucks...I thought being able to run other OS was a really good idea that made the ps3 more than just a games console. I'm still pissed that they removed backwards compatablity from the new ps3. Really, really sucks IMO. the newer machines should be better not a step backwards OK they may loose money on the ps3...but it's sony they must make loads from mobile phones etc. Also don't they get money from game sales? I still have an original PS3 but it has broken and I replaced with a new slim one assuming it would do everything the old one would do. I'd happily install cracked software now and run pirate games just to spite the bastards.
