Downhill Tyres

Any suggestions for DH tyres? Prefereably in stock at CRC ;)

Running minions at the moment - 2.35 on the front, 2.5 on the back. The 2.5 one is almost bald, so I want to replace that with another 2.5, stick that on the front and stick my current 2.35 on the back.

But, they're out of stock in 2.5 in 42e compound pretty much everywhere. Is the 60a compound that different? What alternatives are there that have a decent reputation? I've heard good things about kenda nevegals, but again, out of stock :(

Im running a 60a singl ply at the rear . a 42 super tackky up front . 2.35 .

high roller

thats what im running in Morzine.

its all you need realy.

free ride tubes. not the silly dh tubes

ie go with 60 a rear( u will skid a lot and wear it down) and choose 42 front if you are bothered. 60 will be fine up front too.

Sorted then :) I'll get one of those.

When are you going to Morzine? I'm off on the 16th july, need to get some practice in! ha.

I've got a 2.35 kenda on the back of my new steed. Seems grippy enough but it's crap at flinging off squelchy mud, which is surprising as it's currently half worn through the tread. Managed to fall into a squelchy bit of mud at the bottom of a run on thursday and it just stuck to the tyre, was still on there after about a half mile of tarmac!

I was in halfords earlier and liked the look of the conti der kaiser but wasn't sure about its thickness.

It sounds like our paths may cross in Morzine this year Tomm and Tom!!!

Me and Chris are there 10th-24th July :)

Back on Topic:

High Roller front and rear, 60a rear, you could go softer compound on the front if you want but its not too important. Either run Dual Ply tyres with normal tubes, or Single Ply tyres with DH tubes.

2.35 Minions seem to come up pretty skinny, if you are going to run the Minion on the back I would probably get a 2.35 High Roller on the front.

Your local halfords are now stocking DK's, how much are they selling them for? My local store couldn't get them largely thanks to Tartybikes ,and CRC getting the bulk of them.

Interesting. I think I'm going there on the 17th, not set in stone yet though.

Cool, I'll have to get your numbers off you before we head out. Saying that, I dunno how big/small the riding area is (I've been snowboarding in les gets before, and it was fairly small.. but I hear you can go over to other resorts too) so theres a chance we'll bump into each other.

I think I'll get a dual ply 2.5 high roller 42a for the front, and move my minion 2.35 to the back :) ......... or actually, seeing as I've just read your reply properly... you're suggesting 2.35 on the front. I'd have thought a fatter tyre on the front would be a good idea, I guess its personal preference. Hmmm.. I have a lot to learn! :/

The Hi Rollers size up wider than Minions so you would still end up with a slightly wider profile tyre on the front.

The Porte du Soleil MTB lift pass covers 12 resorts spread across both France and Switzerland!

Yea it takes about 20mins to ride from the top of Les gets to Morzine, its a fun ride too. Make sure you visit Les Crossets on the swiss side, the view on a good day is f**king spectacular!!!

Heres a good simple map http://mappery.com/maps/Portes-Du-Soleil-Map.jpg

As for tyres, 2.5 Highroller single ply 42a with medium weight tube on the front is what I'm running. Probably 2.35 60a minion on the back, again with freeride tube.

Im going in august

As John said i'd go for wet screams in the wet muddy, but from now onwards this year, you should be fine with minions or high rollors, I've got super tacky High rollors at moment but proberly going to get 60a one just because there cheaper and will last longer.

None of the individual places are that extensive - Les Gets has 2-3 decent tracks, same with Morzine. Avoriaz has a few more, and there's plenty of really cool stuff over in Chatel / Champery. The ideal place to stay IMHO is Avoriaz (sort of in the middle) and then you have fairly good access to everything. There's definitely a lot to do if you go over into the different valleys, but yeah limiting yourself to Les Gets would be pretty boring after 1-2 days.

You can just go chair lift hopping... Chair lift to top, ride down other side, chair lift to top, ride down other side, etc etc. You can cover pretty big distances doing this and fit loads of runs in. Some are out and out taped DH courses, some are wide, winding fire roads, and everything else in between.

£24 for a 2.5 i think. I'm fairly cerain it was 2.5 but i looked at quite a few that day. Halfords are crap, they told me the other day they had tried to get in barrel adjusters for rear mechs but never found where to buy them from. Hmmm, who makes rear mechs? Maybe try shimano?

Sure it was a DK? They're usually around the £50 mark.

They need to look for a cable adjusting bolt unit, not a barrel adjuster and they are available from the Shimano distributor haha, numpties.
