Hey guys I want to go rear disc soon so just want to know how good they reli are, at the moment I am running TNN's on my 04 raceline maggies with no booster on a echo urban rim with a soft grind (because it needs a new one) but I have always wanted to go disc so are they any good? The one I'd be getting is a hope mono trial with braided hose and 160mm rotor thanks guys,

Alex.

Im still struggling a bit with my mod disc. Its good, i love that its quiet and looks cool, but im still not sure if its got better hold/bite than a maggie. It probably just needs setting up a bit better.

The only places I tend to bend discs are in competition/natural situations, this is because of the objects you are riding on having protruding edges, image sidehopping onto a rock, not making it slipping down and hitting a smaller rock. That's the only case where I have bent on a disc.

On most mods with 160mm rotors, the only way you can hit the disc in street when your doing a sidehop for instance, is if both wheels slip from the wall. Just the rear wheel slipping out will not be able to contact your disc.

Discs on mod bikes make sense. They're really difficult to hit unless you're riding natural most of the time in which case they might get caught up inbetween the rocks.

I had one on a Python, Gu and a Monty 221Ti and it was great. Lots of hold on a 180mm disc, way more than a Maggie rim brake. There wasn't as much bite though and the lever didn't have as much a positive feel as a HS33.

I think the level of bite/hold you get does kinda depend on the rotor quite significantly. I know that at one point Ads had the Try-All rear rotor on his mod and I had the standard Mono Trial, and mine had better bite but Adam's had better hold.

Personally, I love it. Most of my riding's on natural so it's boss for that, simply because they just don't really slip at all on tech bits where I'd be worried about my Magura starting to slip slightly (just booning up steep rocks on the back wheel with my back brake just holding perfectly is awesome!). It took a while to get used to because you don't have the same sort of feel from the brake when you're feathering it/modulating it, but once you get used to how a disc feels then you're sorted. It's nice not having to re-grind my rim every couple of weeks, tweak my pads, etc. Reasonably fit and forget. Having a working brake in wet conditions is really nice too.

Only thing I don't really like about the Mono Trials as standard is just the lever shape and the feel of the lever pull, but I slipped a Tech lever on and that totally solved that issue (Y)

I've had disc and moggies , but i prefer disc because in my opinion they are so much better , but they can work terrible if you set the up crap , my discs are set up really good now and i haven't had any problems apart from bending the front rotor a few times.

But then again you dont have to worry about swapping pads , grinding rims , buying new rims ect like maguras.

Just go double disc.
