casualjoe
I've been getting up to date with bike parts again, trying to bring my old Revell back to life. Im probably going to get the '09 Revell 450r frame http://www.revellbicycles.com/pages/frame.htm because my last one rode so nice. For me a steep headangle with 130mm forks = The headtube has been beefed up nicely so I'm looking to get some longer single crown forks like 160mm+ to handle the end of season braking bumps. Would love some 08 fox van r's but there havn't been any on ebay so far, budget is £350 tops as I'm changing everything but wheels, bars, pedals and rear brake. Anybody rode the rockshox domains? Or is there anything out there you think may be suitable? Any suggestions welcome. I never realised how Marzocchi have lost their awesome reputation since moving to Taiwan, shame. tomsutton
I have rockshox totems on my commencal. I love them. Im not sure they would look right on a hardtail. My friend has domains there nice, similar to the totems just not as beefy. You could go with marzocchi just dont get the new version of forks get the 66s. I have ridden some fox 36s there very nice! Luke Rainbird
In case it's any use to you Joe, John Shrewsbury is looking to shift a pair of Rock Shox Domain 302s (180mm) for £
casualjoe
Yea they sound good, I'll have a word with him. Totems and Lyriks are awesome but may be a bit out of my price range. I'll keep checking ebay though. 66 ETA's sound good but from what I've read, any model with an ATA cartridge sounds like a major let down. Tomm
Should be able to get a second hand pair of totems for £350. Domains are like the poor man's Totems really - they're OK but seem a bit variable. 66s are good pre 2007, variable QC after that. Heavy but buttery smooth. 36s are nice if you afford them and are happy servicing them every so often. I feel like I should point out that putting massive forks on that frame will make the thing handle really badly I'd definitely go for something smaller travel - Apart from the weight, Marzocchi Z1 FR from a few years ago are pretty unbeatable. Or Pikes.
haydon_peter
160mm forks will completely ruin that bike! If I were you I would be getting some U-Turn 454 Coil Pike's If you must go 160mm you will find the odd pair of Fox Float 36's for around £350 second hand... casualjoe
Yea was wondering if I could make such long travel work on a hardtail, if I point it downhill with my weight over the back holding onto wide bars I recon it could handle anything. I used to run boxxers on an orange zero for a while, pretty fun but mabey a bit too much. The 2006 Marzocchi Z1 Light RC2s sound damn good but cant find any just yet. I managed to find the 2009 version going cheap http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260601471109&fromMakeTrack=true cant go wrong with coil I guess or have Marzocchi really lost the plot since 07. Tomm
Of course you could ride a bike with that much travel, but you really don't want to... Boxxers on a zero sounds horrible I don't really believe that the post-2007 Marzocchi are all rubbish. There were just a lot more stories of failures but I wouldn't necessarily worry about that. Those 07 Z1 "sport" forks are pretty low rent though, they look like OEM only and have crap damping. In fact, they look incredibly similar to my 07 OEM bomber "all mountain 4s" which were shite - sticky, poorly-damped and heavy. I would avoid if I were you. casualjoe
Cheers for the heads up about OEM stuff, I'll avoid any, "these came with my bike" type auctions then. Getting a better idea about forks now just not gonna rush into it. I didn't have the Boxxers on for long, just a few weeks to try it out for a laugh. Has anyone ever tried that type of set up? Im not saying its great but Its pretty funny when your younger Doing manuals and big drop-offs are a breeze, its real comfy in the air and it still turns in OK You gotta remember, the travel isn't always at full extention, when your pumping round a berm or just pulling G's with front tyre grip, its gonna squash. Uberlong travel hardtails are definitely suited to trials riders methinks, just not as extreme as 200mm on a trials frame
