The Design Thread

J-Yeah! The last one is much more in line with what i was thinking...the idea of connection and the hugging character all work....the two F's need a little playing with though to create a piece of pure harmony.

We shall set to work tomorrow evening and then we can make sure you have the logos set in all the correct formats for web use and both digital and litho print. Also you can raid my typeface library and encyclopedia to see if there are any other faces which might work better.

Coming from a completely non-design based viewpoint, having the subtext looks sweet but leave the tail of the 'y' a little out of line or something. Is there any way to tweak things so that fits together nicely too? Might be a bit of a bitch I guess?

Edit; Megaquick cut/warp/paste job to explain what the f**k I'm actually on about :P

Matt - Cheers, glad it's one which needs tweaking rather than it being shite. I'll give you a shout about tomorrow night sometime in the very near future (Y)

Luke - Totally right, I'll make sure that's one of the changes.

Thanks for all the thoughts guys, it's definitely helped without me needing to go too far from what my whole ethos of doing the business myself is. Over and out.

I'd love the surname Rainbird, but i'd much prefer if i could choose....'Raindog'.

Anyone who knows why gets my undying love for all time.

Tom Waits. Pow.

EDIT: Damn you Swaledog.

You should most definetly do that.

I think i'm going to need it on 180gram Vinyl as well.

The snippets from that video sound soo good.

He's one musician who seems to genuinely get better with age. I thought Orphans was fantastic, but he just never fails to impress.

Have you got an albumn you hold in particularly high regard? (I'm not going to use the word favourite).

Although I agree with you that he definitley gets better with age, Closing Time is my firm favourite. I like Bone Machine a lot and Nighthawks gets regular plays as well, if that counts?

I've not actually listened to Orphans that much, and I don't own a copy - need to get hold of that I reckon!

Bone Machine stands out for me. and when in a sombre mood there's not much better than Closing Time - also it was the first album i bought of his so always holds a certain special place for me.

Orphans: pre-birthday. Bad as Me: post-birthday sounds like a very good idea to me. Orphans just has a bit of everything you like about him and there's some really interesting cover on there.

My girlfriends Bro was lucky enough to see him play on his last tour which i've always been quite annoyed by, so i'm hoping to go along if there's a Bad as Me tour.

That fifty6 logo is looking nice and clean, I like it.

On the subject of logo design. Was visiting the girlfriends family in Cheshire and one of her uncles talked about started his own furniture business (He does it at the moment but doesn't have an identity or anything)

So I offered to have a go at doing him a logo. He said how he wanted to aim it a bit upper-class as its the kind of people he usually works with and he thinks his work is of that standard.

Now i'd not really designed anything for that kind of look before but gave it a bash anyway. I know its simply a typographic logo and there's not much to it but I like it.

What do you guys think?

Sorry JD(og)..

Sorry to butt in here, but my nickname has been Jdog for potentially the last 6 years and I've got limited use rights on it.

Rainbird is my manager and will arrange royalties if you would like the continued use of the name. (I also hold rights to Jpigs however this is purely for sexual reasons)

JD, making money out of social networking in a promotional and advertising sense the way you are is simply genius. I know there are companies who specialize in that however so many business don't know how great a marketing tool it is and in my opinion would jump on that if the price was right. Good on you if you are going to be going forwards with that and good luck getting it out there.

You can keep Jdog, not really very 'me' ;)

fifty6 has been around for about 4 years doing what I'm doing, and full time paying for my life for the past year - now comes the next step of getting rich so I can find happiness.

Didn't mean to make it sound as up my own arse as it does reading back, I'm just having fun being my own boss :)

I don't mind JD, you're actually doing it which would give you the right to be! I hope it works out, if it's been going for 4 years it's got to be quite successful.

I did the sorts of things you do personally at the Specialized Concept Store I worked at and was amazed at the responses I got just by posting new bikes on Facebook and inviting other cycling clubs/influential cyclists in the local area to look at the products and comment on them. It kind of opened up a new type of business, with people coming in JUST to see the bikes they had seen on Fb.
