Bronz
Haha not good. I'm still dead nervous when it comes to playing about with/on my server! Dribbble is a new site for designers to upload/share 300x400px previews of work they're on with so that other designers can critique it. It's really hard to get an invite to it (it's not open to everyone yet) too so I was quite lucky to get one.

Bronz
You can browse through it as a non-member, but you just can't upload anything
Theo
Is this thread the sort of thing I could just upload some of my artwork to? THe stuff on here all looks very professional to me. Edited June 7, 2010 by Theo
Bronz
That depends, is design art, and is art design…?

Theo
That depends, is design art, and is art design…? Both is both? I suppose it's personal opinion. Ill upload a pic of my latest *design* anyway. The colour should be done by tomorrow hopefully, it's a competition entry for deviant art. Also if this qualifies its the design for a street trials course, as seen on another thread. Edited June 7, 2010 by Theo
Bronz
I think design is functional, art is decorational, so they aren't the same IMO. Design does a job, art doesn't. Design is a way of decorating information, art is just decoration… I can design, I am a designer, but I'm no artist.
Matthew62
I don't think its a simple as that. The boundaries between the two have always been blurred and to me i think they can very happily co-habitate without the need to over-define exactly what one or the other is. Design is not by any means 'decorating information', nor is art a means of decoration. Those analogies ignore such a wide spectrum of work created under the art & design banner so i think its far to much of a laise faire comment. I understand in essence what you're saying, and there are key differences between the two areas. Often simply, design (whatever it may be) serves a purpose to its users. Art serves a purpose to the artist. Again whilst this is a fairly accurate but general explanation it is equally quite wrong when there are many examples of art and design doing the exact opposite of what has just been described. I wouldn't worry too much about which is what, and what is which - just carry on making lots of it, and make it good!
Bronz
Oh yeah, my summation was pretty vague and broad, but that's what I believe on the whole (after all, art and design are subjective). Of course, it's nowhere near as clear-cut as I made out, but I'm not deep enough to offer a proper answer
Matthew62
I don't think anyone ever comprehensively has. After all its still a common debate as to what art and design are and how they differ.
Theo
I don't think anyone ever comprehensively has. After all its still a common debate as to what art and design are and how they differ. They constantly differ yet they constantly draw aspects from each other? Thats all I can think of, mind you I have just had a huge maths GCSE... The Hitcher
Depends what you class as art?! Fine art = get a real job. I saw an ant cross person sculpture today, I nearly told the artist / captain kirk who made it to quit life.
Revolver
Now here's a question to bake your noodle: Is any idea new, or is it a different take or combination of old ideas?
The Hitcher
"The secret of creativity is how to hide your sources" - Einstein I think as technology advances there are new ideas. Like google earth, there is an alphabet created solely from shots of the ground making up the letters of alphabet, its rather cool and I cant be bothered to find a link but its around. So yes new technology / things / objects / stuff = new ideas. Edit: although saying that, you could have done it from maps I suppose. Ah well either way...
