TrialsMan Dan
I have a HS33 on my Ashton Effect and after changing the pads i am struggling to get it set up properly. I am using it on vee mounts with the Evo2 adaptor kit, with Evo2 clamps (drive side is the QR clamp). Is it the same procedure of set up when using a normal 4 bolt? Ive been following the Magura manual on the website as well as the guide on Tarty's website. I can just get the non-drive side set up okay but its the drive side with the QR clamp that's a bit difficult. Would changing to normal clamps be useful to make setting up easier? Bit of a noob question but im fairly new to maggies after just using vees previously, but any help appreciated. Dan
rab shropshire
the effect has vee brake mounts so if you want to run a maggy you will have to use the evo2 kit. what problem are you having with the setup. But if you have dedicated vee mounts i would stick with a vee brake and just get some decent pads and cable.
TrialsMan Dan
I am using it on vee mounts with the Evo2 adaptor kit, with Evo2 clamps. Just having trouble getting it aligned properly, i.e. pads square and good bite.
Theo
Just having trouble getting it aligned properly, i.e. pads square and good bite. It's well fiddly, I use my bank card to get it square, are you managing to get the bolts in properly and tighten them?

Theo
Yep, they are in properly. Any pointers for setting the QR side? Never used the evo2 kit so I wouldnt know, I used tensile clamps to begin with but they made the break slip now I have echo tr's they work fine. The only other thing i can think of is if your bolts are bottoming out in your frame? if they are you can be brave and file/cut them or be a pussy and buy some newuns (like me) good luck mate
PeanuckleJive
The evo 2 mounts are a pain in the ass, I never ever managed to get mine to be properly good on the QR side, because they shift a little bit as they tighten, from what I found Talk to tarty direct and see what they can suggest maybe? TrialsMan Dan
Any pointers for setting the QR side? Anyone? Ive had a play around with it today but struggling to get it set square, ive got a fear that the pads are running at a bit of an angle which would cause uneven wear. The pads tend to drag when spinning the wheel backwards but not forwards
TrialsMan Dan
Another thing ive noticed is that the bottom booster plate is slightly off to the non-drive side of the frame. Would this affect alignment of the brake much?
Sam Styles
i set a evo 2 up for my mate, and i didnt bother with the QR. i just found a spare bolt, put it in where the QR bolt should go, and tightened it up like normal mount. also instead of using the evo2 boosters, my mate put a trialtech 2 bolt booster on the top bolts ( the ones that do not go into the frame) . i found this alot more easier. and the brake worked very well! Thebigdoug2010
I've only heard bad things about the Evo2 brake booster, seems to be a general pain in the ass! Would recommend original Evo booster or trialtech booster or take it to a shop for pro setup.
Ali C
can't beleive you but a maggie on a frame with vee mounts! What I would do for a frame with vee mounts!
totaltrials
can't beleive you but a maggie on a frame with vee mounts! What I would do for a frame with vee mounts! Ditto. Evo2 mounts can be a pain, but you should be able to get a good set up. I'd probably do away with the quick release and just fit a normal bolt rather than the hour glass bolt. If your brake is relatively old, you might have some pretty indented cylinder washers. Getting some new ones should make setting the brake up much easier as it won't pull out of alignment when you tighten up. So you should be able to align the pads perfectly square by eye then gradually tighten them up. Cylinder washer:
TrialsMan Dan
its brand new. I think ive got it set up good now, im just not sure if its properly square though, the wheel is free running in both directions (no drag) but there does not seem to be alot of bite, im using V!Z yellows and the drive side pad kinda looks as if it is wearing more than the non drive side or maybe its just me lol. Olicf
Glad I read this thread before buying hs33 for my v mount. Looks like its a bit of a pain in the ass to set up. Would a mechanical v brake such as SD7's give the same feel and performance as hydraulic rims? Edited April 1, 2010 by Olicf
Ali C
yes, just make sure you get a good cable and pads

Olicf
yes, just make sure you get a good cable and pads Just ordered Avid SD7's, an odyssey linear slick cable and I got a pair of speed dial 7 levers. Came to £45 altogether (new) a good bit less that HS33 would of cost me. Lets hope they feel much better than my current tektro's.

Olicf
make sure you get some decent pads What would you recommend for when I get a bit more money. By the way its for a stock phase 1.3. The irony was that right after I ordered the new brakes I went out 2 practise my back wheel hops and attempt some pedal kicking but tektros slipped and I fell on my ass and slightly sprained my wrist. Starting to heal now and I think I will be able to ride again when new brakes arrive First time I had properly fell of as well.
