I used to not think about weight at all back in 2005/2006, especially for tyres I didn't care. However, the rolling weight makes a bit of a difference... and tyres and pedals are the best and easiest places to shed weight. Still, that being said a 24x2.4 Holy Roller tyre is around 700-800g only right? For such a small diameter tyre, 19"s are horribly heavy. That's been the way it's worked for quite some time now. It shouldn't really be surprising, and if you're expecting a brand new, light component to be cheap, you're always, always going to be disappointed. A Holy Roller has pretty thin sidewalls, a totally different shape, and a totally different tread design. If they had an equivalent of the 19" tyres in 24" size, it'd be pretty damn heavy. A High Roller 24" tyre would be more of a fair comparison and they're 1.3kg or so, which is a fair bit more than - say - an Eagle Claw. I knew Holy's had thin sidewalls, but I just wondered why can't 19" tyres just go down that route and revise the tread pattern a bit? You see how so many people cut the knobs off tyres, and it actually aids grip in a lot of cases. That also being said, I think there is enough money in trials, especially a brand like Echo or Koxx to try out kevlar beaded tyres (which will change the ride feel a bit I know,) or some other more radical weight saving measures that BMX and MTB companies implement. I also suppose it wouldn't hurt if Maxxis tried updating their CCs a bit too. Certainly got the means to! A specific question just for Mark!: Hey d'y'know if your Lynx feels at all alright for the type of riding you'd be doing brakeless on your Urban? All the flowy, BMXy stuff incorporated. Looking at your setup, your mod seems to have the necessary bits to make it pull up nice and sound? Vid-wise, any chance you guys might be able to upload your latest ones onto a server I can view from China? (Like the server you use for your Tech guides) Cheers! If we've got time could possibly try and find somewhere. Regarding 20" stuff - if my 20 rode like my 24, I wouldn't have my 24 basically. It's easy to lift the front end on mine 'cos the front end's nice and high, but it's not as good for spins and the like primarily because mods won't ever be due to their tyres and so on. Making tyres is a pretty expensive business, getting new moulds made costs a hell of a lot of money so most just won't really bother doing it. It doesn't really make sense for Monty to change their mould 'cos if people want to cut their knobbles off their tyres they can, but if you don't want a more open tyre then you don't have to have one. If you start making sidewalls super thin and the tread different, you'll drastically change the characteristics of the tyre. What I like about my Monty is how stable it is on off camber stuff, so if you start making the sidewalls really thin and changing the rest of the carcass, you're inevitably going to lose that. From that other guy (who I think mentioned it in this thread?) who rode your bike said that your bike was rimming out for him, so I guess you might run them lower than me which would explain it? Running a Monty at the moment and all i can say is stability wise its the worst out there, i could put more pressure in it but then it feels horrible trying to get any bounce from the tyre on flat surfaces. Mark W Posted May 13, 2010 Report Share Posted May 13, 2010 ...in Try-All tyres news - light! Stiky Rear 26" is a mental 969g, the Shift front is 514g, and the Stiky Lite 19" is 888g. The 19" is also 4mm wider and taller when inflated than the previous, which I think makes it the widest rear mod tyre we do. The Shift and Stiky Lite 26" are about the same size as the previous ones. They're also pretty expensive unfortunately. The stocks are a little more expensive than the mod tyre, but again almost all kevlar bead tyres are going to be fairly pricey.
