Max Quinn
I went for 'cripple yourself' just because trials forum needs its dramas and trials and tribulations. The past has proved that the sensible option is never as fun.
RobinJI
But you can buy a scirocco with tidy body work for like £1000, surely that would be the better option?
shamus
robin is correct, by a scirocco that mechnically f**ked/need work, strip the panels you need, replace with your damaged ones (if its only slightly damaged) sell for almost same purchase price. Prawny Baby
Allan, man the f**k up and do it yourself boyo. Anything can be done with enough time and patience. if I were you, working on a budget, I'd be spending a load of time on prep, then spraying the car satin black with rattle cans. Satin will hide small imperfections in the filler work, and the whole lot will cost you under £50, just a few days hard work. Definately DO NOT go spending £2000 on paintwork on a car that's worth so little. that's a mad idea.
Tony Harrison
Regarding the debt, just look at what's it's done to us on a global scale. Avoid. Save and spend, or don't spend. Or do the work yourself.
Muel
Buy a tin of black satin, paint the whole car with it, then drive it bent. Mad Max styleeee
Tony Harrison
Or douse it in parafin and set alight to it, in recognition of the fact that cars are bottomless moneypits that seldom give a return. Not being funny, but with most of the people I know that modify cars, the end is never in sight. There's always something that needs replacing, changing or, well, modifying. Just a suggestion, like...

craigjames
As true as that maybe be, just about every Scirocco comes with its own set of problems..I've got this chassis and engine set-up reasonably well and underneath the shite exterior it's reasonably good. Prawn dude; I've tried working on this panel already I just cannot get the swage line to budge, it's been squashed flat and the panel has rippled, so it flexes but won't stay popped out, and the fold has been kinked, with it being such a vast area filler just won't do it. I think I may have found a straight bare shell local to me anyway, going to look this weekend and see whats what. Also, at no point have I thought about financial return on this car in the future..I want to do it so I know its good and solid and straight , kinda like the car and plan on keeping it for quite a while. Robin wasn't suggesting get rid of yours, merely strip the shit panels off yours and swap them for the good panels on the tidy but mechanically f**ked rocco? Save muchos money
Jolfa
Spending 2k on a £300( ?) car?! Bitch what are you, retarded? Go on Pistonheads and look at the cars you could buy for 2k, then have a think about it

JD™
Out of interest..What was the final bill on the Mini? What has the BMW build set you back so far/in total? My thoughts exactly. I totally don't agree you should spend £2k on that work, because just replacing the panels off another car should work out cheaper. But there's a lot of hypocrisy so far in this thread by people who have spent a lot of money on a relatively low value car.
Skoze
Just leave it as it is and drive it?
shamus
Just leave it as it is and drive it? if it makes the car look a dog and that bothers you, then by all means get the replacement shell/panels. or if its just the driving experience you're interested in, then leave it as is. thats my theory with my sumo, its gotta ripped seat, skank palstics and grimy frame. however it's mechanically golden though and i guess it makes it less of a theft target so screw it. i'll just enjoy it, i don't look at it when i'm astride and the revs are bellowing up, which is the whole point of a bike imo. i've mates whose bikes look like they've just rolled them out of the showroom, yet my murdered (its blacked up despite gold wheels itlooks pretty understated) slag keeps them honest
Fish-Finger-er
you say the panel wont budge, but aint the panels paintwork f*cked anyway. may as well slide hammer the hell out of it to get it popped out, then sort out the holes from the slidehammering with filler/paint. as for alex spending a fair bit on his car, id be fairly confident you couldnt buy that car set up that wat for the money its cost him, its a car built for a task/sport. allans is as far as im aware, just a daily drver that he likes to give a bit of a thrash now and again, and the point is, you could buy a car set up like that for the money itd cost to repair, and still have £1000 left over. RobinJI
Actually I was suggesting you get rid of it. haha. For example, my rocco cost me £700, all the bodywork was straight/solid as anything, and it wasn't at all bad mechanically, went though its first MOT without as much as an advisory. I reckon I've probably spent about £1300 now in total, including buying the car, and it's a really solid, sound, not slow scirocco. All you'd have to do is spend the money on any rocco with good bodywork, and stick all the good bits from yours on it. If I was to sell mine it'd probably only go for maybe £1100. Hypothetically if you were to buy that (If I was selling it any time soon) you'd then have 1 strait shell, one 16v engine, with £900 spare compared to getting yours sorted. And on top of that you'd have a set of recaros, 280mm front discs, another set of decent 15's with toyos as more spare track wheels, a spare set of coilovers and a whole cars worth of spares. Or, find someone breaking a scirocco, and pop around with an angle grinder and a 1mm cutting disc, and relieve them of a rear quarter panel. But there's a lot of hypocrisy so far in this thread by people who have spent a lot of money on a relatively low value car. Forgive me if this sounds utterly cuntish, but there's a bit of a vast difference between something like my Mini, (a car built for track use from the ground up with hundreds of seriously extensive and unique modifications) and a rocco with a valver dropped in and some sticky tyres.... Same again with alex's beamer. investing serious money involves serious thought and planning. I'm not knocking Al, his projects seem like great fun, but the happy go lucky attitude towards it all doesn't seem to me like something that's going to turn into a show winner, or a track day warrior for that matter. It more appears to be a young chap wanting the fastest motor possible for the least money, which is no bad thing in itself. I'm not saying don't paint it by any means, I'm just saying it'd be stupid to spend £2000 on a paint job on an otherwise fairly standard car. And as you asked, the Mini has cost me almost £18 000 so far, and I don't regret a single penny!
Greetings
What has the BMW build set you back so far/in total? Not even close to 2k, it'll be around that when it's finished. 2 grand for some panel beating is the most ridiculous price I've heard in my life. edit: and painting of course.
