sandwich
Hi all, I'm just wondering if anyone has opinions on what shoe and pedal combination to run, with pros and cons of each For example, are trials specific shoes really necessary, or will any bmx or skate shoe work just as well? pros and cons? Pedals? (I know it's been done to death) But for example would trials specific shoes work better with caged pedals, whereas bmx shoes work better with platforms, etc? Any opinions? Also, what are your personal shoe/pedal combos? How do they run? Thanks.
PeanuckleJive
Flat skate shoes with caged pedals. Take the inner cage off They work, I dunno what else you could ask for. You could spend some money on trials shoes but in the end, they're practically flat hi top skate shoes.
Sam Styles
at the moment, i am riding with a pair of etnies and caged pedals. My foot does slip off sometimes but not very often. i would recomend either a really good pair of platform pedals, with "evil" looking pins, or just a pair of normal cages. mostly its just personal preference. and for shoes, i tend to buy shoes with a slighty soft sole on them so they can grip a little bit better. be carefull when buying the shoes though, because you dont want a shoe that is wide as it may be more likely to catch your brake booster or cross-over pipe. hope this helps
Slobert
I prefer a flat skate shoe ( I wear classic Vans slip ons) and caged pedals. They work great. Sucks when you slip a pedal, but your shins will stop bleeding eventually.

PeanuckleJive
shin pads +1 as an experiment I put some platforms on my bike at the weekend and had a ride, I'm back on cages and I can definitely say they're miles better

PeanuckleJive
I will soon be running VP cages with nike air jordan hi tops, just to see how it feels if that fails, I'll still be on DC skate shoes with VP cages proven winner! Slobert
Shin pads are for sissies. Ok, and people who don't like pain. I have tried some shin pads ( for freeriding more than trials ) and haven't found a pair I like to wear. Oh well, I have so much scar tissue on my shins its almost like built in shin pads. Ahhhh....air jordons...classics ?? and highs are the best to ride in becuase youve got support round the ankle but trials shoes like try-all dont ? loveing the set up btw
Puddin
Has anyone tried 5 10 shoes for trials? I haven't bothered using mine yet as I thought of them as more of a dh specific shoe but they have a super tacky sole and I can safely say they are alot grippier than any normal trainer! fletch
nice flat shoes like airwalk one's or the various waffle sole vans and v12 style pedals.
T-comprider
hi, about shoes, you could just buy some pretty decent skate shoes as they offer quite good protection etc etc....
Jackeh
DC's/Fox's (or any skate shoes) then platform pedals. Works well for me.
shamus
I hate waffle patterns normally. I tend to ride in narrowish skate shoes (Etnies, DC or Vans For grip on platforms- squares or criss-cross or circles, anything which creates little pockets! oh and if you lose pins, replace them! PaulG
I used to go skate shoes and VP cages then switched to try-all's and Wellgo's and I can't believe how much better it is. cages tended to loose there grip fast as they were worn but the Wellgo's last me like 8 months - a year(as opposed to 2-3 months for vp's about 2 weeks of that being grippy) the only cage pedals I've seen work are the try-all single cages but those things look fairly evil really and still wear down and bend quickly. If you don't want to get trials specific shoes try some 5.10's or shimano's as at least they are designed for pedals, something like the sam Hills which a few people around here are running and really like. Puddin
When I was riding downhill I was first using DMR V8's with skate shoes, I then got some 5 10 riding shoes and the differance was massive much better grip. I then upgraded my pedals to burgtec penthouse flats (supposedly the best flat pedal ever but too big and heavy for trials) and the differance wasn't so big. I then tried skate shoes on the new pedals to compare and while being better than the dmr's the differance was no where near as great as the shoes gave. So instead of debating between skate shoes, as over the years I've learnt they are all very simlar, if you really want the grippiest shoe/pedal combination I'd get some decent riding shoes designed for flat pedals!
