Flarature Of The Headtube.

Just got my adamant which has been through the wars with all the threads tapped etc. And I noticed I could pull the headset cups out by hand! Does this mean it's flared and what can I do? It's an adamant a3 with onza mongo headset. I'm going to try my other headset which is a cheapy one and try that later.

Any help is good :)

Ive been able to put headsets in with my hands before, but aslong as there not falling out as soon as you let go, or you cant twist them really easily it should be fine, like mark said you can get fsa pig headsets which are like 1-2 mill oversized and just use that.

They're only very slightly oversized, with an interferance fit like this a couple of thou makes a massive difference.

It's not necessarily their width, but their length - some of the FSA Pig headsets (e.g. the DH Pro) have really tall lower cups, so it'll stick into your frame further and hopefully hold in better. Same principle as using a longer bolt if you've stripped the first few threads on a bolt hole, if that makes sense.

You won't get that Da bomb headset in an Adamant frame. The inside of the headtube hasn't been machined deep enough to allow cups that long to fit.

It depends how easy it is to fit in with your hands. Is it tight push or is it a wizards sleeve?

You could try some other headsets, some might be very slightly bigger just with the tolerance of different manufacturers, it might vary slightly. Try a cheaper headset.

If you want to really bodge it up when all else fails, get some chemical metal on the go.

Erm dont know how to describe it really,

Like putting a plug it a sink pretty easy and will stay in but pretty easy to get out aswell.

My chris king headset is like this any any frame I have used it in. To be honest mate it should be fine as long as you dont notice any movement in the cups when the headset is all together. im suer you know how to test it but just in case,

1. put the whole front end together

2. do up the headset compression bolt nice and tight

3. lock on your front brake and rock the bike back and forward

4. put your hand on the cups one at a time whilst rocking

5. If you can feel the cups moving your head tube is most likely flared

Ive put a bit of tape around the cups and when done up tight they seem okay at the moment :)
