isitafox Posted February 20, 2010 Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 After months of waiting for the funds to arrive I've finally managed to get my heavy tools built up this afternoon with all my lovely new kit from tartys. The only problem I've got however is the freewheel I got, Echo SL108, is absolute shite! I don't if its just me or the fact its new but it skips like mad! Not even putting much power down like when I rode the bike down the road it still skipped, now is this cause its new, cause I've not fitted it tight enough or simply that it may be faulty? Don't... 1) There is no grease in it (they come with light oil to lubricate the pawls and springs) 2) That will void your warranty If you can get a video of it skipping, or some photos of your setup that would be helpful. We've sold hundreds of these and not once seen a single problem with them, so as Anal said it is unlikely to be the freewheel... Cheers Adam Yeah I whipped it off with the old man last night an realised it only had light oil in so de greasing would have made no difference. Put it back on and its still skipping, had my dad watch while I gave it some power and he's also sure it wasn't the chain slipping. Just had another quick go to show my mate an he saw it too, happens every couple of pedal kicks. Everything is brand new, the setup is Echo SL 108 freewheel, Trialtech Lite Z610 chain, Try All single speed tensioner and a Trialtech Sport 15t screw on sprocket. Got a pic below, if you wanna see a better pic let me know. What do you reckon? I know if it is the freewheel it is a one off problem so just be sure I'm not holding it against Tarty or owt, an your advice is greatly appreciated! If I can find my chain tool I'll try whipping some more links off an straightening the chain line out in case I am wrong but sure it's not that. If the freewheel skips it makes a big bang and the cranks jump fowards, if it's the chain then it just kinda clicks and crunches and sounds shitty. I reckon it's just your chainline myself. I've had it before with new stuff and not enough chain wrap, feel kinda like the frewhel/hub is skipping. Ended up sorting it with a shorter chain. The general concensus is that those freewheels are the dogs bollocks, you could just have a funny one. Some people say freewheels need to bed in, I disagree. There's nothing rubber of anything that forms itself in there, it's all hardened steel, so you can be sure that it might wear in over time, but if it's skipping from new and there's no grease in there anyway, just oil, then there's something wrong with it. Sounds just like the chain skipping on the rear cog to me. Remove as many links as possible from the chain (might just be one looking at the pic). Another thing you could try is to modify the tensioner. un bolt it from the hanger and remove the little pin with some pliers. then push out the hanger bolt and replace the silver tophat spacer with just a pedal spacer or something that fits over. This will allow you to move the tenioner arm closer to the chainstays and lock it out so its quiet. I would be willing to bet that will fix the porblem. Considering you're the only person that's had a problem with this freewheel and the pictures show you're chain is a bit too long I'd say shortening the chain and checking the chain line will sort it out. Think this has been the problem, the chain wasn't running perfectly inline as the rear tensioner sits a bit skewiff so if I pedalled then brought the chain back it wasn't sitting properly on the bottom of the freewheel, if you understand that! After a lot of messing around shortening the chain, adjusting the tensioner and generally trying it I think its sorted so will see how I go. The chain line won't be causing the skipping so don't worry about that. Try taking a link or two out and that should solve it, try and get the chain more like this: http://tartybikes.co.uk/images/bikes24/large_inspiredteam1.jpg If you still have issues there is one final thing you can do and that will 100% sort it, although it does require a quick modification to your tensioner.
