Rohloff Tensioner Modification

either my tree trunk legs or some poor landings on the bashring have caused the chain to snap after just 8 weeks! at a guess...its probably the latter...

the chain was the thinner KMC chain, and after going along to the LBS and finding a K710 (the fatter one, the guy said it was one up from mine) i found that it wouldnt fit through the tensioner....

i checked tarty and they suggest a washer in each side of the wheels...which is easy enough for the lower one as its just a nut and bolt setup. the upper wheel though has some strange bolt with a groove at the end with one of those clips to hold the thing in place? hopefully someone will know what im talking about

anyway, i was wondering if anyone knew what this sort of bolt was called so i know what to ask for, and where the best place to get a slightly longer one would be...

also, if anyone else uses the same tensioner, if its a) worth changing in the first place to run a fatter chain? or B) can be fixed using another type of bolt?

you dont need a longer one. just take the clip off. put the washers they came with in then put it all back together

I used to use those k710s for ages never had any probs then last year i bought 2 and they kept snapping all the time. switched to the lighter Trialtech Lite Z610 HX, 3/32 and i`ve never looked back best £14 i have spent plus no moding rohloffs.

KMC Kool Chain (710 or 810 I do not remember exactly), no problems were found, BUT there was a little issue with bottom plastic sprocket. After two weeks of riding I have found, that it was cutted in width by chain. So it it is better to reduce a little width of sprocket with use of rasp or something similar before set up new chain.

If you've got a K710 and it's been strong enough, try the K810 - it's the same strength, lighter and will fit through a Rohloff.

As for the modification, you just take the washer out from underneath the circlip on the upper wheel.

Cheers

thanks, but from looking back at the spec, it was a Trialtech Z610 Kool chain that i had....and it was the K710 that i managed to find in the LBS but havnt been able to use yet.

Will see how that holds up when i eventually get the spacers i have either side of the wheel (they seem to be just a fraction out size wise, needing a rat tail). the circlip comes out fine, i was just wary of whether it would give me enough space to stick the washers in, and then be able to replace it afterwards! everyones said it should be fine though so ive got faith...
