anyone use one or had probs? reason i ask as got one, well had one on my simtra :giggle: after a ride today i pedaled mildly hard to get a run up at a bank and the bracket coming off the runner snapped, luckily i didnt get too hurt or whack my knackers on the frame etc as the chain came off and locked up,but im a bit dissapointed as there ment to be good yet slight power through the chain and it broke? i may make a new bracket but ive lost faith in it now, any recomendations to a tensioner that works in same way ie pushing chain down not up or can you alter the other ones to push down via the spring? anyone wana buy half a kingz bwahahaha , cheers guys

People tend to use different things for the springs.

Luke Rainbird on the forum uses sections of an old steel ruler, several people use hacksaw blades stacked together, and some even buy sprung steel and make small sections.

These tend to solve any breakage problems.

thanks for the replies il look into getting it bodged tomorow but to be fair ive got it in my head now and dont trust it, i value my nut sack more then having to buy a new tensioner lol

Seriously, there wont be any problem as long as you use something a bit more substantial as ali said.

i think you were too optimistic with the tension you were trying to get, if you look at the spring it shouldnt have gone at such an angle, but you can use various things such as hacksaw blades, rulers or whatever is strong, flat and bendy.

you better off with a rohloff though :)

The 74 kingz would have been fine if you'd just gone and bought a 6" steel rule and cut and drilled to the right length. Rowan has been using a steel rule spring for ages and advised me to use one and i sorted one for Luke. Having used one on my stock and my 24" for a while now with no issues for any of us, personally i think you just wasted your money buying a new tensioner.

well maybe im old school but having an expensive build bike and bodging something aint for me, 19 quid for a new tensioner not made of rulers and hacksaw blades is ok for me lol  ive had a few nasty injurys in the past from "bodges" etc so il stick to the right stuff for the right job buddy (Y)

Using a steel ruler is hardly a bodge, its a marked improvement on the original springs. Its more impact resistant, has just as much natural spring and you can fine tune the length of the spring.

It's fair enough if you consider it unworthy of your bike, i wouldn't say my bikes were cheap either, but you've spent money on an inferior product and ignored the advice of several more experienced and knowledgeable riders, just seems a little naive when you've posted a topic asking for advice on the subject.

i here what your saying matey but for the sake of 19 quid its fine with me, the riding wont be affected by a diff brand tensioner lol well i hope not as im rubbish as it is :$ i race and ride motorbikes and havent got time to go whsmiths and drill and cut a ruler etc i ordered loads of bits from tarty so got them to chuck one in the box, saves me grief then and time. i didnt mean unworthy of my bike just i dont want a ruler bolted to it lol  i just wanted to no if the break was a common thing and it appears it is. tis no biggy s i had the 19 quid spare bud. cheers
