Hey Everyone

I came across a leaflet about Tagging Your bike with an electronic tag.

Something about you can register it with the police, using the unique serial number, and that they could track your property?! <_<

It only costs 14 pounds, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

Since all our bikes worth soo much :-

Website

(They do have similar versions of this kind of product suiting for different needs)

I know i used to have one years ago that went down the seat tube, and i haven't checked your link so i'm not sure if its the same basic principal.

If it is...........it t'aint gonna be a lot of use to most trials riders. I could always run one on my Inspired, but i think they;re kind of dubious. All it does it correctly identify your bike IF the Police recover it. A photo or thorough description would do the same. Chances are if your bikes nicked it isn't really likely to be recovered.

I'd just get good bike insurance instead.

im with matthew on this one

used to have a datatag (the same, if not a very similar concept) on my mountain bike years ago. it was only after getting it done did i think about how relatively pointless the idea is on slightly more expensive and less common bikes. if a frame, and whatever else left of it is recovered by the police, the chances of it needing to be officially identified are extremely unlikely, especially as their will be a police report previous of a bike of that description being stolen.

with a trials bike...it becomes even less useful, how many people have these bikes?! there will no doubt be pictures/photos you'll already have of the bike itself, and the person who stole it will have quite a job trying to convince the police it is theirs considering the specialised nature of it!

Also, if the tag is embedded into the frame, if you brake that frame you would have to go through all the hassle of re-registering a new tag.

I know this doesnt apply to everyone but some people change frames every 6 months or so.

Plus what would you have to do if you brought a tagged frame, how much of a hardship would it be to change the name?, and what would the implications be if you didn't?

I have to agree with the others, I would rather spend the money on something else. I agree our bikes are unique, most of them are custom built to our specification, if a run of the mill scrote stole my bike, they would stop after a 100 yards cause as most people like to say "its got no seat" and more to the point, if somebody knows what it is, they will know how much it costs and if they stole it and it would be broke up in minutes. So as it stands, if your bike is tagged the frame will be in a river quicker than jumping jack flash, get insurance, I know it costs more but its worth it in the long run. I would also suggest legal cover because if catch any little f**ker nicking my bike I will wrap it said bike so far up his arse he will pedal kick every time he sh*ts.

i had mine done last year for free. It's just a little bit of metal no bigger than a lighter flint inserted into any where it'll go. I had mine inserted through a hole in the chainstay and super glued it in. After the river comment i may just remove the "I'M TAGGED" sticker off my bike though. It's a good idea if it ends up in a shop, as all the police have to do is run a scanner over the bike and hey presto my details come up.
