duncshaw
Been thinking about while trials isn't popular. Apart from it not being the best spectator sport in the world I think one of the reasons is that it has an image problem. It just isn't very cool. Got me thinking about tights and how they must be having a detrimental effect on the sport. How can we expect the public to embrace the sport when most of the top riders wear tights with skimpy shorts on top. If the uci banned them in competition people wouldn't see there favourite riders wearing them and would be less inclined to wear them themselves. I know they are supposed to have positive effects on performance but banning them would provide a level playing field. What you reckon? What you reckon? your thinking far far too much into this, you ride a sport because you like it, not about how it looks. trust me riding around with a bike with no seat is far more uncommon then wearing a set of thermal tights with BENEFITS, for sport.!!! Ben John-Hynes
banning them would provide a level playing field. That's like banning parts 'cause they're lighter. It's a performance benefit, as are lighter parts. EDIT: Its your problem if you don't like them EDIT: Re-read it. Banning it because of how people are looking at the sport is just stupid. Mark W
im with you duncan... its bent... they banned it from downhill. enough said. They banned it for quite a few reasons, but the main ones were that they thought for mainstream TV coverage it would ruin their 'motocross' look, and because riders who were sponsored by MX clothing companies were torn between wearing their sponsors clothes or wearing skinsuits. It was either keep your sponsors happy but be slower, or wear a skinsuit and be faster. Someone in Dirt made a pretty valid point though that no-one gives a shit what someone's wearing if they're at the top of the podium, which is fairly true. Either way, sponsor demands and looks were the reason that skinsuits got banned, with the looks reason being because people who were more image conscious were losing out to people who wanted to win. However, with trials skinsuits, you can still wear other clothing over the top if you want. It's not quite the same thing. People's main idea about trials is people 'wearing that gay lycra' as they have done in comps for years, so I don't see how wearing what are effectively lycra tights with some shorts over the top is any worse than what people wore before. If anything it's better, that photo of the Swedish team wearing just a skinsuit was as f**king rank as it was graphic. At least with stuff over the top it's not as bad? Not only that, but wearing tight under-clothing is the least of trials' worries as far as 'looking gay' goes. Spinning your way through a town centre with a ridiculous gear on a seatless bike looks pretty shit, so does hopping around everywhere on your back wheel. It's not a sport that looks cool, so there doesn't seem to be much point in restricting performance clothing to try and stem the tide of trials looking shite. chris4stars
maybe its different elsewhere, but the whole idea of trials from those not quite in the know is 'that sport that guy does who was on rudetube and children in need' yes its not exactly accurate, but from my experience of getting into the scene...its the main preconception! as a result, i know a lot of people who wouldnt have even looked at the the field, now check out a whole load of videos on youtube etc (still with more of a street orientation but its progress). i wouldnt be surprised if the popularity and coverage increases more over the next couple of years than it has done over the last 10 or so
Mark W
Just because it's always sort of interested me - people keep talking about needing to 'boost the image of the sport' and 'make it more accessible'. I've never really understood it too well, so what do people a) feel that trials will gain from it, and b) think they will gain from it? Matt Vandart
Closet!!!! Don't make me laugh, trials is gay! When a mans pants are so tight that his "organ" is forced down one side of his pants and forms a bulge showing the clear definition of his privates Uncle Jesse's pants were so tight i couldnt keep my eyes off his massive side pipe Edited January 27, 2010 by Matt Vandart
