Single Speed, Or Not Single Speed

I'll be ordering my wheels from tarty tomorrow and was talking to the old man before about how the bike build keeps coming up with things you forget about and the costs keep escalating (he's rebuilding his old Harley from scratch again) and he suggested doing it as a single speed instead of 6 to save a few quid.

I'm a bit wary as never had a single speed before so wondering what the pros and cons are, and how will I know what gearing to run based on what gear I used to use before?

I like the idea as it makes life a lot simpler but worried about burning money on multiple sized sprockets!

Single speed's a hell of a lot easier, better and cheaper. Even with people running cassettes, it seems most people just run one gear out of them anyway. That way you get to learn your pedalstrokes a lot better without having to readjust for each gear, and there's less to f**k up. It just works out a lot better (Y) Anyways, if you're riding trials on it, then 16:14, 18:15, 20:17 or 22:18 are probably going to be ideal trials ratios.

Well I'm hoping to run a front freewheel all being well so will see what will fit where.

Thanks for the opinions, think I'll make the change.

Will save a good £50-60 on shifter, cassette, etc and a lot of fannying around setting gears up, one of my least favourite jobs!

100% go for single-speed....i wanted top keep my gears as i have to ride 3 miles to a station at least once a week....but i just use 18-16 with 170mm cranks, its that much better for riding actual trials.

Well I got my wheels ordered today, never realised when I was picking everything but gonna be a full Echo TR setup rims and hubs together.

Just gotta wait a week till they're built up an sent out now and then I can get started on the drivetrain side of things.

Not sure what to go for in terms of cranks, freewheels etc. as will depend on how much £$ I can blag for my b'day next month as I'm skint!

Bloody mortgage
