MadManMike
Evening!I've just got Windows 7, if I unplug one of my SATA drives and install it, then plug the drive back in, will I need to format the hard drive?I want to save all my documents / videos / music basically.Help
Danny
It should boot the win7 drive just fine if you set that as the primary hard disk in the boot order.Id move all your files outside the 'documents and settings' folder though as you may have issues accessing files inside there from the win7 installation due to NTFS permissions. MadManMike
Sorry I may have worded it wrong.I'm running XP, I just want to move files onto my 2nd drive, then move them back once 7 is installed. I'm just worried that 7 won't recognise my 2nd drive and will make me format it before I can use it...
Danny
Should be fine mike. Although i suggest you keep 2 separate partitions so you can store your doc's separate to your windows installation. Makes reinstalling windows so much easier. If you only want 1 disk after installing win7 then partition the new disk into 2. 60gb or so for windows and the rest for documents.Install windows on the 60gb partition then format the rest in windows and copy everything across then remove the old disk. MadManMike
After TONS of issues, I have 7 running.Initial thoughts - good. I've tweaked all the annoying settings like constant bugging about Admin rights and potential threats etc...So far all seems good. So glad I skipped Vista, it really is the biggest pile of turd ever. Thanks for your help

MadManMike
I've got 4gb of RAM, so no problem there. My problem was that I made a partition so I could keep my XP install, 7 seemed upset by this and wouldn't even recognise the XP install on the other partition. In the end I installed 7 again, over the XP install and then got rid of the partition I had made. Not a huge problem, but making the partition in the first place took ages and ended up being a waste of time. 7 seems to be very good, very fast and just good in general - especially liking the taskbar. Danny
Handy tip with the new task bar if you haven't figured it out already...Left click - Opens if not open - Goes to current window if already open.Middle Click - Opens a new window

I have huge issues with 64 bit, specifically with VST plugins for music production.Really? Takes <20mins for me.Likewise, took about 15 minutes to install for me. Installation wasn't the problem, crappy partition hassles were what took all the time!
l33th3tr33
Installation wasn't the problem, crappy partition hassles were what took all the time!Same here. But xp is still the best in my eyes. MadManMike
Same here. But xp is still the best in my eyes. What makes you say that?If we were discussing Vista I'd agree, it's slow, clunky and just generally doesn't do what you want it to. 7 however is brilliant, plenty fast enough, useful new features and just helpful. It does everything i need it to with no problems, not implying 7 doesn't. It's just personal preference.
Dan6061
What version are you using Mike? I got 64bit Ultimate, because I could. Really like it! Only running 1GB ram, but it runs a lot smoother than Vista did! Had no issues with 64bit compatability either.
Danny
Running 64bit Home Premium here as it was a bargain £40 from tesco I'm guessing mike has problems with 64bit because he probably runs some specialist music hardware which is made by small companies that suck at making drivers.
