mila
Hi, I've got the problem with 26" trialtech fork. I have Echo SL headset. When the fork is on, there is about 1.5 mm space between the base plate and the fork, because fork has radius at the end.I think that the base plate should sit on the fork. Should I put some spancer between fork and headset, machined the base plate (or fork) or just let it by and ride? Thanks guys.

eskimo
It should sit flush, but it'll just be dodgy tolerance on the race rather than the fork. Nothing to worry about but you could do this:Make a slit in the race with a small saw, so it's like 'C' shape rather than a complete 'O' shape. Make sure you remove any bur/ excess material that could hinder the fit. If that doesn't make sense, it's just like the compression ring that's used. Don't worry, once everything is pulled tight it works perfectly. I've done this and many others also, with 100% success.
mila
But the Echo SL headset already has a "C" shape race and even after tightening the space is still there. For example on the Echo fork with two piece steerer tube there isn't any radius so that the headset race can sits perfectly.Any other ideas? Ali C
does the headset wobble? Trialtech leave a small radius there as a sharp corner makes a stress riser. DON"T get the fork crown faced. The crown may seat lower with a little force, but first check the usual things...the steerer is the right length, the top cap (if using different one) doesn't bottom out on the steerer ect, these things would stop the echo crown from seating correctly. mila
Headset doesn't have any wobble and everything besides the space is OK.Theoretically the base plate can't reach the right place, because the radius on the fork is much larger than the tapered edge on the base plate. It looks approximately like this:I think probably everyone with the same set up had similar problem. So is for the right function of the headset necessary that the base plate sits on the fork crown? eskimo
If that diagram is correct with your fork then that ain't right. But since i really don't fancy removing my forks i couldn't say if mine had that curved edge. But thinking about it more, it's quite possible the Echo race is to blame. Like you say the Echo fork doesn't suffer from this, and since they're both Echo... I would of thought Tarty crew will jump in when they're online seeing as the title is Trialtech. They should shine some light to what is actually the problem here. I can't see the Trialtech fork being machined wrong though. But if it were me, i'd definitely not ride with that setup, it's just going to mess things up.[edit]Just read Ali's post again. Guess you've got a problem then if in fact your race is square. Never actually noticed they curve that section on some fork. Edited December 25, 2009 by eskimo
weirdoku
I have a similar problem on my 20" forks. There's that same gap you are talking about maybe a little bit smaller though. I've ridden it with a echo SL for the past few months and I don't see any problems.
AdamR28
So is for the right function of the headset necessary that the base plate sits on the fork crown? No, it's correct as it is
