tomturd
Are they racing bikes, or road bikes? I have no idea. Anyway, I got it off ebay for £20. I have no idea what it is (the auction said 'brookes racing bike', but I don't think brooks (no 'e') make bikes - only saddles?). Currently stripping it down, which is a complete f**ker.. its got some white primer on it which nitromors doesn't touch. It looks like someones tried to strip it before.. so theres patches of this white primer that I'm wet and drying off of it... must have spent a total of around 10hrs on it so far. New things for it:

cranks (the extracting thread is ruined on the drive side crank, so not putting that back on)

new inner/outer cables (white)

new saddle

headset (the old one is rusty and beyond de-rusting)

tyres

downtube shifters - chrome ones instead of black plastic

paint - very dark pearl blue methinks.

Everything else I'm keeping as it was. Danny
Did the hammer and wd40 fix it?
tomturd
Ha. I do like my hammer and WD40 - it helped in the removal of the bottom bracket with crank arm attached. Its also going to be used in removing the headset, in conjunction with a very long flat head screwdriver
tomturd
Some very boring pics...A clean with alcohol2/3 coats of primer, wet and dried (ooh so loverly and smooth)3/4 coats dark blue pearl, wet and dried inbetween each. Camera seems to have an amazing ability to pick up perfections because they look pristine in reality Going to wait 24hrs now, sand them down again and give them some laquer which should hopefully bring out the pearliness. Then back onto the frame Kinda wishing I didn't start this now, its getting expensive too! hopefully it'll be worth it :/ I don't really like racing bikes anyway ha.EDIT: ah shit.. looks like I may have painted the floor a bit... tomturd
Did you ever finish this / clean the floor? It's still in bits at the moment... I've been riding most weekends since I got it, and just bought a second hand specialized big hit, so the racing bike is being neglected at the moment. If I don't go riding tomorrow I might do some work on it
tomturd
Updated: And a question. Now, its probably stupid... but I can't for the life of me work out how these shifters are meant to work - I replaced the original black plastic ones with these new shiny ones (which happen to make a nice subtle clicky sound), but when I move them back (to get into an easier gear) the rear mech just pulls them straight back. How is it meant to work?! edit, the chain isn't on yet. would that make a difference?
bigamac
The colour of that is beaut! And with those shifters, i think, but dont take my word, Having no chain on there will effect it, but there a fairly tricky type gears to setup i believe. Dwarf Shortage
The colour of that is beaut! +1, looks especially nice after seeing what it started off as! My Dad's got an old racing bike hung up in the garage, with similar shifters, I'll show him the forum when he gets back in and see if he can help you out Edited August 30, 2010 by Ninja Manatee
Rusevelt
Nice job, you should pretty proud of all the hard work you put into that steed.
tomturd
Cheers guys Taken enough time to get it to this stage.. this is bike number 4 of mine and unfortunately has been bottom of my priority list (although its working its way up). Glad you're all liking the colour, I spent more on paint, stripper and lacquer than I did on the bike :/ The whole thing has cost me about £100 - £120 so far (inc cranks) which is more than I was hoping for. Ah well its been fun so far, will give it a few rides to work then probably stick it on ebay along with my other bikes to make space and money for a specialized pitch. Seeing as the sun is out, one more pic -
Christophe'
If you were trying to get this bike ready for "Howard" ? Last ever episode of last of the summer wine was on last night. Shame , would have suited him .

pashley-phil
love the old roadie bike, nice colour to. I got one the other month and its great. I can wheelie it sooo good now and the bunny hops are coming along well, must be getting nearly a foot in height here's mine, As for the gears when the right hand lever is horizontal with the down bar it should be in the hardest gear at the back, and as you pull the lever towards you it should make the gearing easier The left hand lever when horizintal with the down bar should be on the small cog at the front and when pulled towards you should go in to the highest cog hope this helps

NVWOCI WVS
What? Hardly i found suicide shifters to be much much easier than anything else to set up. if you can see where the cables route, it's just a case of getting everythimg in position, and taking all the slack out of the cable, as they're not index shifters. Exactly, no need to make sure the mech is where it should be for each gear. Tom if you haven't worked it out yet. See that little loop of metal on the outside of the shifter, flick it up and twist it, it adds more resistance to the shifter and stops it pulling back, realised i hadn't acctually answered last time. tomturd
This is a coincidence.. I was trying to sort out the shifters yesterday and it looks like they're just not compatible with my frame. I had a look inside the shifter and it looks like it expects to be put onto posts with flat spots on it. That probably makes no sense. Basically I've been trying to put a round peg into a square hole. I need shifters with round holes.. not square ones. Probably still makes no sense. Eitherway, since my other bike got nicked I've been riding it to work (with just the one gear), its bloody quick, and wobbly.. and dangerous haha.
