lukeanderson31
hey there, i keep having a problem with my rear hub;I'm currently using a hope bulb, but for some reason, every so often the pawls and spring seem to just "disappear", it's really strange.I've had the hub inspected but theres nothing inside the hub that could cause this, and ive bought new pawls and springs every time. Has anyone else had problems like this? was hoping to try and look on here for a new hub but i didnt realise at first you need to be validated ah well, my time will come. and can anyone recommend me a new hub to use? i need something moderately priced, with freehub (not fixed) and have disc mounts. Thanks in advance guys, luke
luke2405
I have a hope xc and when i replaced the pawls i used abit too much grease that kept making it skip took it apart countless time until i figured out the problem. After I cleaned it out and used a smear of grease it has worked a treat.Hope this helps Edited December 2, 2009 by luke2405
FINDUS
I think somebody must be messing with you if they just disappear. the free hub body is sealed until you remove the wheel and then the free hub body. unless your hub is missing the seals and is running loose either that or the oil you use is is eating the pawls! do you find bits of metal inside the hub?I have used bulb hubs since they came out on the market for trials and for down hill and have lived to be sold on for upgrades.you need a new hope pro 2 trials hub or even better a Chris king single speed then you wont have to worry about them failing both hubs do cost a little more than most but it should be a one time buy as with other hubs they fail and need to be replaced..hope any of my jumble helps.PS watch out for the pawl thief oh and good post thats 1 step closer to being unleashed on the forum Edited December 3, 2009 by FINDUS
David 200909
How about converting your drive, to the same set up as a Mod uses? That's what I've done to my Stock. Best thing I ever did. I now have 108 engagement points, Brilliant!!!Plus I have much more ground clearance and using Trialtechs titanium half bashring fitted to the bottom bracket works a treat
lukeanderson31
i've thought about changing my drive setup, but i also wanted my wheels to be compatable with all my bikes, just incase i decide to tinker about might have to invest though if anyone can state that it#s more reliable, as its not like im lacking in ground clearance anyways and the first time it happened, i did think someone had removed them as there was nothing, just bone dry hub shell. whereas the second time i had one and a half springs left, and there was only me around my bike :/i thought about the pro 2 trials, but im currently lacking the fundingsthanks for the help so far any future input will be greatly appreciatedEDIT: forgot to mention, it would also help keeping stock style drive as ive just ordered a set of middleburns for my drive, and have the chainring/bashguard necessary already Edited December 3, 2009 by lukeanderson31

lukeanderson31
i've considered this but it seems like a huge investment for someone like me who's just started trials, and i'd probably go for the pro 2 trials anyways as its warrantied for trials use.but still 130 pounds ish, still seems quite steep for a beginnerare there any half decent hubs out there that wont break my bank balance, im still a student so dont get much fundings

LiamWood!
The Hope pro2 will last your forever if its serviced regulary. So it will work out cheaper in the long run, if you keep buying cheaper hubs that will kee breaking all the time. Duncy H
Now you are validated thanks to some kind person you can go get yourself one in the for sale section. The hope pro 2 is what you should get, I was very impressed with mine, unless you can afford a king.

max-t
I don't know why people are recommending King's if he is just starting out. Pro II is far cheaper, easier to look after and easier/cheaper to replace if something goes wrong. You need to know what your doing with a king. craigjames
Go scout the for sale thread or ebay, you'll find a pro 2 trials fairly cheap and its spot on for what you're looking for. How old is the bulb? could be the ratchet ring is worn, which new pawls and spring wont really help with.....
