How ever, now getting older I don't want the presents. Of course its commercialism, so is every other public holiday, even St. Georges Day everyone goes out and pumps a fortune into the pub business. How can you say you would ideally like everyone to be friendly/family happy joy relaxed whatever every single day of the year, but systematically not like the one day that people naturally come together?Think what you will, Christmas isn't a Government conspiracy. I do find it difficult to separate the massive emphasis on buying stuff from the rest of Christmas though. Also the way Christmas is represented in commericial advertising turns me off Christmas, in the same way that I get turned off the idea of modern romance because of the way its portrayed in films/advertising and the way that those films/advertising actually influence the state of modern romance. Modern commericialism and advertising distorts everything. The more appealing part of Christmas where people come together can be achieved without Christmas, although people have just come to depend on Christmas instead it seems. I know it's a cliche to complain about commercialism but from my position the way it currently exists I don't think it's very healthy.I guess also I view Christmas like New Years Eve, where everybody gets excited because of the countdown to a new year but I just don't relate given the way I think of what a year actually represents. I just don'tfeel that because we label a day something that it should be any better or more special, especially when people can be brought together anyhow. None of us are right or wrong in our views toward Christmas though, we just achieve different things be holding different views that are more suitable to who we are. Although perhaps our different views may lead us to feel happier on the day.I still celebrate Christmas and birthdays for those around me though because I recognise that they are meaningful to others, so I'm not a complete grinch. Might try the same.Christmas for me is a time to relax. The holidays are the best bits. As long as im able to keep off the TV and stay away from all the Christmas and January sales adverts on the telly im fine. Anyone else get really annoyed when on the 26th you think your free from it all, and there it is, a new Christmas advert for NEXT YEAR!? "Order your hamper now". NO, f**k OFF MY TELLY EVIL CHRISTAMS 2010 ADVERT!My family dinner usually comprises of my grandparents, a Preist and a Nun, putting far too much salt on their turkey and making me baulk.Stuffing is the best bit about Christmas. I enjoy the break more than anything - being off work, usually with friends and an excuse to go out and have a good old piss up.Christmas will be different this year, its my first Christmas in about 4 years that I'll have a girlfriend; so that should make it much more enjoyable for us both.I've never been one for gifts; neither christmas or birthdays. If I want anything for myself, I'll go out and buy it there and then. So really the ideal gift would be a bottle of nice vodka or just a book, I'm pretty much happy with anything I get to be honest. Christmas is spent with the granfolks which I do enjoy a lot - means I get the time to nip out for a pint with my grandad whilst dinner is cooking, which we don't usually get the time to do.Usually my uncle has a christmas party too; which is great because my cousin (also a really good mate) returns from Germany (he's in the Army) so I get to see him and get hammered.All in all, I'm looking forward to it...but yeah, leave Christmas where it belongs, at Christmas time. But what makes me happiest is making other people happy, one of the turning points for me is when I bought my stepdad who I literally wish would die a new Ipod video because he wanted one. Yeah I hate the guy but for those 10 seconds when he unwrapped it and realised I'd saved up my money to get him something that he'd wanted all his life I felt a bit different about everything. Then 20 min's later I wanted to shove the Ipod up his f**king ass because he wouldn't let us turn the news off incase James Brown wasn't dead. Anyway, now I go out of my way to do things for people who are close to me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't !
