It pretty much pretends on what your going to ride, and personal prefference of course.

In my opinion, discs are better in natural/rocks and stuff, and I prefer a rear magura on the street.

Magura is more bitey on back but a disc tend to hold better (it doesn't slip the same way as a magura).

I have started riding natural more than street now.

depends , if i were you id get a frame the suports both , buy a rear disk , and sell the brake you like worst :)

This is a very good point.

More frames should have the option of both, I really can't understand why some don't have disc mounts.

Like my Skull, I really wish it had a disk mount, better for shitty muddy winter riding, and then you can go back to Maggy in the 'Summer' >_<

I can see where your coming from... Best idea though disc in the winter ect...

I just swapped from a rear Magura (water bleed, standard lever, 4-finger blade, TNN LGMs, Trialtech booster, sharp grind) that was basically amazing to a dual disc setup with a 160 Monotrial rear rotor and in terms of bite it's up there with my Magura. The only real difference is purely lever feel, but that's something you get used to. Ads has a Try-All rear rotor on that has some good hold but not much bite, and it's not really as nice as my Monotrial rotor. It just works really nicely, and especially in the wet. We ride natural every weekend come rain or shine, and it's nice to know it'll just work. On a mod, it just makes a bit more sense, really.

For street use, it's pretty rad too. Reasonable modulation 'cos it's a small rotor, but hold when you need it.

You can never underestimate how nice it is having a silent rear brake too ;)

I was debating this question a few weeks ago and thanks to a few emails to Tarty, I've more or less decided to go with dual disk stock bike. Now I need to decide whether to go with the +35 or the +60 GU frame, almost all the other parts have been chosen...

The case for dual disk is down to the best performing Magura brake pads all being a faff to refill - unless you buy two sets of CNC backings to keep a reserve you have to wait for the glue to dry before fitting them, having quick wear rates on my rear magura (With most of them the faster the pads wear the better they work), faffing with the TPA mid ride to keep the bite point consistent, hold still not being perfect no matter what I do (So no better than the reputation disks have), the complete lack of modulation leaving no hope of adding manuals to my trick repertoire, the noise for everything except on/off braking, having to grind the rim to keep the brake working correctly, new version rim brake Magura levers being worse than the old ones and harder to fix in terms of the strength of the TPA adjuster and so on.

It all adds up and it's starting to annoy me given I spend at least as much time and a lot more miles in much worse conditions on my XC bikes and commuter bike, but thanks to hydraulic disk brakes and full length gear cable outers I need to do nothing in terms of keeping everything in adjustment except slap in a set of brake pads every few months (Which takes a lot less time than removing Magura rim pads, levering out the old pads, cleaning the backings, gluing new pads in, sanding about 1/3 off the pads so they'll fit my bike and fitting them) and a drivetrain every year.

The Hope trials brake seems to be the only consistently well regarded hydraulic option for use on the rear of a stock bike, though given how many seal kits Hope sell (I've never seen a Shimano or Magura seal kit for sale, but I don't know anyone who's ever needed one either), it may be a poorer long term choice than shimano or Magura, but I can't deny those I've tried work very well and the brake is designed specifically for trials bite and hold.

For the front I'll probably go with a Louise as I'm happy with the one I have on the front of the current bike. Both will be 200 mm rotors...

Looks like it'll run to about €1400 though, so it'll make for a serious christmas present to give myself :)... I'm hoping to build it with everything black to fit with the stealth thing since it won't howl every time I pull the brakes...

Just a quick question, how much better does a 4 finger blade actually make your brake? Do you think it's worth getting for the rear?

I'm not sure whether to get one or not but my back brake is lacking in hold just now.

16% more power, according to the maths Ads did on it. It's definitely noticeable. It gives a kinda weirder lever feel because it just pulls in a different way, like the arc your finger makes is a bit different to the 2-finger blade, but it is a lot better than the 2-finger blade. My brake barely ever slipped with it on 'cos you just put so much power through it. They're reasonably inexpensive too if memory serves, so may be worth doing to try and see if it can make your hold better (which it's basically going to do :P).

For the record, I was using it on the back...

Alright. Cheers for that. Think i'll give it a shot.

just wondering, just how much flexier does it make your back brake? I'm running a built in booster with a Trialtech 2-bolt on top and it's really rigid and solid. Feels great but I don't know if I want to sacrifice that feel or not.

I would never have a rear disc on a stock, the spokes flex farr too much and I am not that impressed with the hold even with a 200mm rotor, plus the fact I would destroy the disc on my first ride would also be a downer.

On a mod however, I would run a rear disc no question. The smaller wheels means there's no spoke flex and the brake holds like a beast! The smaller rotor is also harder to hit....its just generally good!

Hold better then a magura?

Oh, Ali ;)

But yeah, on a mod, better hold. Ads made me do the "Boon Challenge" on a slopey rock at Shipley on my bike (when it had a Magura) and his disc bike - my Magura didn't really slip or anything, but his disc just didn't give a shit about it and just worked faultlessly.

For what its worth I ran a rear 190mm mono trial out back on my 26" for... 3 months or so and now I'm swapping back to a Magura.

With the boon challenge thang... Disk will work better. I found my disk loads better for rounded rocks, static hooks and wheelswaps from sloped rocks and that. Maguras seem to hold alot better on square edged stuff.

Every few months? :o i've not had to change mine for way longer than that and they was second hand too!

You also realise what the public hear when you use a disk for a while then use a maggy after. Really is annoying!

Edit: Just like to say I voted fo DD ;)
