My bosses son is a year younger then me, and for his 17th birthday, his parents bought him a 08 plate (brand new, only been on 08 plate for 2 days) Renault Megan Sport F1, with EVERY added extra that you can think of, sat nav, ipod docking station etc... his parents paid £32,000 for the car... and his insurance was £5,499 on a provisional license...

My first car was a 97´ Fiat Punto, got it off my mam, as she bought a new C3, and the Punto cost me £1200 to insure on a provisional, then i declared that i had passed my test, and it went up to £1500, and after i done pass plus, it went down to £1487... yeah, thats right... Paid £100 to do a bloody pass plus to try knock loads off my insurance, and it went down £13

But what pissed me off is, my insurance went up £300 after i passed my test, and i had 10 days to pay it, unless i would have to pay another full payment of £1500... which REALLY sucked! how the hell do they expect 17yo drivers to pay such amount?

What would you reccomend for a FIRST car ? - some thing that look nice can be modified

Its not worth modifying until a couple of years as it adds on to the insurance as you have to declare the mods.

The only way they would find out is if you crash and the police get involved.... correct me if im wrong.

And here we have the problem with new drivers these days. Why do new drivers have to buy cars anyway? Too many times, and really, it's been too many times, I hear of people crasing and writing off cars within a week of passing. So many friends and friends of friends have done this, usually with so-called mates crammed in the back.

I know it's a generalisation, but I just have this vision of you, in a crudely and ghastly modified Fiesta thinking that you're a good driver hacking round a sharp bend, losing it, ploughing headlong into an oncoming car, disabling the driver for life and having f'ck all insurance to pay for the shit you've caused.

Which i respect you for replying you may have had some link to something that oyu have mentioned above, and yes it is what the majority of people my age do but there are the odd responsible people around , the only thing i owuld change would be the wheels, window tinting, convert to cd player (not really into "my car must be the bassy'st car around" sort of itnhg) and have a little tinker with the engine.

Wheels (rims) - get something that looks a bit better then sauce pans

tinting the windows - i hate haveing the sun in my eyes so window tinting

tinker around with engine - clean it up abit and change the things that need changing...

Lad, honestly there's no point in modding your first car except the sound system which you can transfer to your new car, because after driving your first car for a while, you will want something flashier and faster then your current car, so there is no point in modding your first car because once you get your first ncb you can look into a few more cars.

Maybe you should learn from my mistakes, and just buy a shitter and smoke it about for a year ? My third car on the road (a months after my 17th) was a 635CSI BMW and it was the most stupid thing I ever did, I drove it like a complete fanny everywhere and generally pissed everybody off. I've had over 30 cars so far (and i'm 18...) and just wish I'd have never started buying bigger and better cars and doing them up, I really wish I'd have just stuck with my little Mk1 Fiesta and spent the money on something good. The money I spunk on cars/insurance could have quite easily sorted me the deposit on a nice little house or flat, instead I've got nothing but good memories and lots of friends with cool stories about all my "crazy" cars.

Don't do it, go buy a shed and forget about it!

Yes they can, but within a couple of years you will be able to afford a better car, you might as well save the money the wheels and tyres would cost you and put that towards the next car. You won't get that money back when you come to sell your car, that's not the way modding works, trust me!

Also there's nothing worse than looking at a fiesta with "new" 14" halfords alloys on, it looks stupid and it makes you look like a plum to everyone else...

Changing the cd player is worthwhile though, I did that to my first car (along with new speakers and an amp) as there is no point changing it's looks or performance (wasted money), but at least you can enjoy a better quality of Classic FM (ahem).

I'm not saying don't do bits and bobs to it, I turned my first car (which cost £300) into a GTI replica for £100 or so. I drove it like a dick, hit no end of curbs and shit then eventually the gearbox died, largely due to me driving like a dick... But since I then got another Golf I just kept all the good bits and swapped them over, I've done this with every Golf I've killed, I'm now on #7

You probably won't listen to any of the sound advice in this thread, and to be honest I wouldn't have done at your age either. But really, call us a bunch of cynical old bastards and ignore us if you like but we're right!

The induction kit - probably not, if its a saxo or sometihng like that then no it would sound so stupid 1.1 (i have know idea on enigines sizes for car's - before i get called a mug for not knowing engines of a car)

You can tint front windows somewhat, but not by loads.

For you, you want a car that's 1.0 to 1.2. These are the smaller engines, and so are cheaper to buy petrol for, and to insure. Any car will go plenty fast enough if the mood strikes you.

Leave it standard. Be happy you've got a car to lug your bike around in. Sound system is a fair idea though, you can swap that out to the next car if need be.
