mr ailsbury
OK so my little brother (he's 17, 18 soon) is wanting to build up a jump/trail type bike, it needs to be suitable for ragging round trails in the woods/small jumps and just generally riding around the streets/to work as well. i've got a pretty limited knowledge on this sort of thing so thought i'd ask on here. He's got about £500/600 to play around with.I basically said look for a hard-tail frame, front and back hydraulic discs, decent set of sus forks etc?He looked at the DMR trail star frame which seems to tick the boxes for all of his criteria. Told him to maybe get some Avid Juicy's and then fork out on a better back wheel, or is it worth forking out for some Hope brakes? Yeah so can anyone give me some more advice on this? Dale-Hill
Avid Juicy's will be fine. You only really need a back brake too.

Tomm
I would always go second hand on a bike like this. I built up a trailstar with DJ3s, Hope wheels for under £200 using bits I had lying around (cranks, pedals, brakes, bars etc) - Thanks to Mike, actually. It would be similar to that Rhythm you've got there, if not higher spec. People say you only need a back brake but I can't ride without a front brake. Maybe it's my trials rider tendencies. Tomm
When my XC frame was sent back under warranty, I built up the trailstar as an XC bike with my Pikes and decent drivetrain etc. It was actually really fun! A bit short for full days but a total laugh. I haven't built it back up as a jump bike yet - it needs a few new pieces and I haven't got round to buying them.
