Single Speed Help Please!

You guys have been awesome in aiding me with advice in order to get my bike together/get me back in the saddle so i salute this new members chat for that firstly!

Once again i need some assistance and pearls of trialsing wisdom from you guys/girls!

Ok i purchased the trialtech lite chain (3/32) and its to fat to go through my existing rear mec or even sit on my eight speed cassette. Anyway because of this i've decided to go singe to save on costly rear mec replacements and save on the weight (Y) I need advice on how to convert my 8 speed cassette to a single ring. Eg what ring, what ring size, how do i attach it to my existing hub sprocket thing, what chain tensioner is best to use? I usually ride a 22t ring in third gear.

Also i purchased a 16t TNN one piece UCI bash plate/ring for my middleburns which looks the sex but i've had a spot of trouble with the lockring tool needed to attach the blighter. Upon trying to tighten the lockring with the new 16t TNN attached the prongs on my tool were to short... so i couldn't tighten the lockring securely. So could you please advise me on a tool that will do the job, where can i pick one up?

Thanks once again!

Kev

Typically for 16t upfront you will need 13t or 14t sprocket on the rear, depending on crank length and how you like your gearing; that is the closest you will get to the typical 18:15 stock gearing.

I personally use 16:14 with 165 cranks, its a touch lighter than 18:15 with 175 cranks. I use the trialtech light rear sprocket, works perfectly and doesnt dig into my aluminium king driveshell significantly :)

As for tightening the lockring, use some loctite on the threads and just tighten it up with a screwdriver (drifting it round), it does make a bit of a mess of one of the tangs but if youre carefull you can minimise the damage.

Will have to get over to wolvo or youll have to come over to lichfield for a ride :D

edit: forgot about the tensioner, have a look on tarty and pick one you like, rohloffs are generally the best although pretty expensive, have a search in members chat for the homemade tensioner thread, theres loads of good ideas (and bad ones :D ) in there if youre handy with a drill and some hacksaw blades :)

Cheers for that mate, massive help!

Went with your advice and got the trialtech lite 14t. Yeah im up for some rides for sure, usually manage to get tuesday/thursday mornings off work so am fee then generally.

No such luck here, 8.30-4.30 mon-fri but all weekend to f**k around (if Im not gallivanting off round the country:D ). If you find the 14t is too light then Im sure Ive got a 13t king cog somewhere you can tryout :)
