Avid Ultimate

I really depends more on the pads.

Personally I think Avid Ultimate is way overpriced.. But i have never used them so I could be wrong.

I ordered Shimano Deore vee's a couple of days ago. I got the calipers for both the front and back for £30.

I haven't got them yet but they should be fine (Y)

Does Ali C not use Shimano XT?

One of our riding mates, Ben, was using them for ages... and they were brilliant. Make sure you use good cable inner and outer seems to be the main thing.

... and i believe he may still have them for sale!!

I used a SD7, which was faultless. My set up wasnt the best but it really did out perform Maggy. I had trouble setting thgem up right in my frame with usin a wide rim. I had a SD3 before that, wasnt much cop. fell apart on me a few times on a ride. The tension screws rounded off, as they were only philips. and sd7 were allen keys.

But lil things like that make a difference I guess

dont know but mine on the front with the vee rock blues from tarty worked stupidly good and the sd7 lever i have is much more nicer than the ultimate my friend has but i think you get more adjustment on the speed dial thing

If i could round Ultimates up in 3 words, it'd be...

Worth.Every.Penny. :)

I found that the SD7's flexed a bit, which is nice if you like a bit of modulation, but as the Ultimates are CNC, theres no flex, making them hold like a beast.

One of the best brake set-ups i have ever used, SD7 lever, shadow linier slick cable, ultimate arms and phat pads in CNC vee backings.

Was the bomb!

personally I don't think the ultimate arms perform any better than any other arms. Infact, I always found the bearings go notchy and then its hard to dial in the arms so they move at the same time.

I recommend shimano arms if your setup needs more clearance, or the Avid sd7 if you have room. Attach that to an SD7 lever (they have a good speed dial adjustment rather than XTRs crap version). Some Shimano SP5 cable and some tnn LGV pads. Oh, a booster helps LOADS for hold, if you havnt got a booster on TRY IT, your brake will be 50X better at holding with one.

he speaks the truth, no need to waste your money on ultimates, ive used both the shimano and sd7 arms and there both brilliant. as ali said a booster is the key it makes one hell of a difference.

I don't think I'd run anything other than a good vee now. My Ultimates are incredible, so easy to setup and perform really, really well with sweet FA in the way of maintenance. Bit pricey, but I picked up the pair for less than £50 so that's not really an issue...

There are some great vees out there, priced for a range of different budgets. (Y)

I was just wondering what makes Ultimates the price they are? CNC?

i would like to set my v brakes up perfectly beacause im getting them over a disc and want them to work a treat.

the set up ali said earlier looks like its gonna cost a penny short of 40 quid. ultimates are 90 somthing just for arms?

Yeh I think its £92 for the arms and the same again for the levers.

Way overpriced. I recently got Shimano Deore arms and avid FR5 levers. So far I'm very pleased with them. They are easy to set up, don't seem to flex too much (my frame does though) and they feel nice and quick too even with clarks cables from Tarty which are relatively cheap compared to some others.

They were £70 arms/levers, though they appear to have gone up to £80+. Like I said though, I paid less than £50 for a pair of them second hand in new condition so look around.

Had to replace the bearings in one arm after the previous owner mashed them - cost £4 for twice as many bearings as were needed and was an easy 10 minute job (though I know Ali C had issues before, so might be worth looking into why for a bit more detail) (Y)
