ogre
just fired on a new back tyre are the lube has got on my rim, only ground it 2 rides ago so whats the best way to get my sidewalls clean please?
Ben John-Hynes
People will tell you hot soapy water, or paint thinners, I know this 'cause I asked this exact question a few months ago, I tried them ALL and NOTHING worked. The only thing I found to get my brake working again is to re-grind. I assure you that's the only thing that'll work!
eddie41085
Hi I once had brake fluid all over my rims an i used hot water with fairy liquid. fairy liquid breaks down oil. Iv also used white spirit. Both methods worked perfectly fine for me.
Echo-Scott
White spirit on the rim and clean it off with water. Then sand the pads down. But to be honest though. Your best option would be a re-grind. Sure, the white spirit will work, But probably not as wel as a nice grind. Just grind the rim and make sure the surface of the pads are clean(Sand them down, Then get a new bit of sand paper and do it again. To make sure theres no oil on the sandpaper you were using to begin with) Then just set it up and get going.
forteh
If youre not wanting to regrind then you could try isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) or surgical spirit with a paint brush to scrub across the grind, probably wont get all of it out though. What lube was it?
ogre
tyre lube
forteh
tyre lube No idea whats in it? Typically tyre lube on motorbikes is nothing more than soap, in which case clean hot water and scrubbing will eventually get it off
Matthew62
White spirit leaves a film behind so don't use that - its why it can feel no better afterwards. You don't need to regrind at all - thats pure overkill and stupid advice, you only got lube on your rim and you've only just ground yuor rim..........plus a new grind might not even get it all off so ignore that advice. All your need is meths. It will break down the lube and clean the rim, also it will evaporate afterwards leaving nothing behind. Feel free to go a couple of times or even use some hot water afterwards but its a great method and works perfectly.
forteh
At a pinch you can use gin (closest to pure alcohol you will find in your local shop) or cellulose thinners (available from wilkos for a couple of quid) to degrease it
Ross McArthur
I'd have to agree with giving your rim another run over with the grinder. Boys, I think he means the tyre residue - which is a total phantom b*****d on rims. I gave the rim a regrind after trying fairy liquid and all that other stuff that didnt work, wiped the pads with a dry cloth and wha la, perfect again.Re-grinding your rim isn’t such a drastic solution at all. It’s not like giving the rim surface a light going over is going to take a heck of a lot of material off!To round up, if a jobs worth doing, its worth doing well. pogo
Brake degreaser, works great and evaporates leaving nothing but rim.

TROYston
i just used a rag + petrol and set it alight for a very short period, and then grind to remove the black/greyness, done, But my rim is a dx33 or whatever it is, not really advised on a good rim.
