N.Wood
I've got the hard (70a) Maxxis 1.9 Highroller eXCeption tyres on my Intense and I'm finding them pretty skittish on wet loose surfaces. They're light but I'm used to grippier tyres. Anyways, I'm thinking 2.35 Maxxis Minion Kevlar ST Single Plys which should be much grippier with not too much of a weight penalty. Also looked at Schwalbe Nobby Nics whic looked good, but are pretty expensive. What do you guys use? I know a couple peeps (Tic/Tomm?) have proper bikes.Cheers then!
Pashley26
Panaracer Fire XC's are the way forwards Or failing that I've been really impressed with the Schwalbe triple pound Racing Ralph Evo's...
N.Wood
Fire XCs are horrible I'm after a softer compound tyre (hence Maxxis STs/Schwalbe EVO compounds). And Racing Ralphs for winter? No thanks. Will keep them in mind for summer though

Will keep them in mind for summer though I don't know if you can still get them, but the Maxxis Helter Skelter is between the High Roller and the Swap thing and they were always a good tire

Fish-Finger-er
currently running maxxis ignitors on the felt, cant fault them, really good in all conditions.
ZeroMatt
2.35 single ply minion fronts on both front and rear is pretty nice.
TomR
My 2.35 high rollers are fine, try some wider ones maybe, and a softer compund and play with tyre pressure maybe? People often seem to reccomend HR's for damp and Minions for dry.
casualjoe
Im rolling on single ply highrollers, 2.5 front and 2.35 rear. The front is perfect but the rear is amost too grippy, its nice predictable in the wet though.
haydon_peter
I have been running High Rollers front and rear for a while now. Both in 2.35 single ply, MaxxPro on the rear and Super Tacky on the front. Really nice tyres that havent let me down yet.The other tyre I quite like is the Kenda Nevegal in 2.35. I ran them on my hard tail for a long time and recently decided to give them another chance on my full sus. For XC I think the tread pattern is amazing however the tyre is let down by poor puncture resistance! I thought 3 thorn punctures in 5 short 1-2 hour rides was a bit of a piss take so ended up putting the High Rollers back on and deal with the extra rolling resistance. I have met a guy that managed to get the Nevegals to work tubeless though so if your up for the hassle of going tubeless they might be worth considering. The Minions are meant to be awesome tyres, I personally havent used them but I have heard lots of good things about them! Tomm
I used to have a Maxxis Advantage 2.25 which was a huge balloon of a tyre with good grip but sidewalls much thinner than high rollers so I kept pinching it. Back on High Rollers now although the Advantage is definitely worth a look if your trails are smooth (Peak district = nothing but spiky rocks). So, uh, yeah. Another vote for High roller 2.35 single ply.
Fixed Pantsâ„¢
Pana fire FR, beastily grippy. Massively knobbly for the wet.
AdamR28
Another vote for Hi Rollers, very predictable, loads of different size/sidewall/bead options. Got Advantages on my hardtail too and they are just the same carcass as the Hi Roller 2.35 Single Plys I have on full sus, can't really tell muuuuch difference in terms of performance but they also seem nice and predictable. Tomm
Advantages are just the same carcass as the Hi Roller 2.35 Single PlysMy Advantages are waaaay different. They're only marked as 2.25 but in reality they've got a much higher volume compared to the 2.35 high rollers, and the sidewalls are much thinner. Unless Maxxis do an XC-specific version of the Advantages? Mine are apparently Advantage-Fr.
AdamR28
Aah, mine aren't 'FR', that's where the difference may be? They are marked as 2.25" as you said though, my bad!
Tomm
I have no idea. CRC only do an XC 2.1 and an FR 2.25 and FR 2.40, not sure if there are other versions?!
shamus
Heard great things about almost all the specialised tyres (rumours of some pro xc riders riding them with the logo scuffed off due to other sponsers )Oh, my 2.1 bonty's (medusa's?) are mint. Both of these may be narrower then your preference by the sounds of it though.EDIT: not medusa's they're mud-x or somethingthe maxxis medusa's i had before though where awesome Edited October 13, 2009 by shamus
chris_m
2.4 nobby nic at the front 2.2 rear great combination for mud. trail centres i use a racing ralph at the rear. furious freds are great for dry conditions with a high roller at the front. i rate the schwalbes very highly
TomR
Heard great things about almost all the specialised tyres (rumours of some pro xc riders riding them with the logo scuffed off due to other sponsers )That seems to be the thing these days, all the DHers are doing it with Maxxis. But yeah i've also heard good things about spesh tyres, although never ran any.
haydon_peter
Yeah, like loads of the Continental sponsored DH riders fitting Continental tyres for promotional pictures but using Maxxis for races
NVWOCI WVS
I used to run a set of nobby nics for the shit stuff, and racing ralphs for the dry stuff, or a front nobby nic with a rear racing ralph if it was borderline, back when I used to race. Can't fault them, but nobby nics are slow in the dry, and racing ralphs get squirmy in the mud. I can't remember what sizes I was running, but I always preferred a fatter front and thinner rear tyre. The thin side-wall version is also worth the extra cash if you run decent pressures and you care about rolling weight.
