I was running 175s, but you could probably get away with 170s if you're running 160's/165's now. Seem to be a lot of options for 170 cranks, so go nuts!

At the moment i've got some 170 gu cranks, but there totally dead. Wobbling on both sides

So 5mm difference on either side probably won't feel like much of a change but im game to try

Does it ACTUALLY make a difference? 'cause I'm in need of new cranks and may consider..

Longer cranks makes you put less effort in, go to faster, if that makes sence, like you can kick the same as you did with 160 cranks but you will go furthur with 170 because its easyer, so you put more effort in, and ends up spinning your wheel faster, that doesnt really make ANY sence, but i dunno how to explain it.

More leverage. I get that, but I was wondering if 5mm will make a difference.

It's just the mechanical advantage of using a longer lever. It's the same as trying to push a door by it's hinges, then pushing it further out - if you push by the hinges, it takes more effort to move it. If you push it further out, it's easier. If you've got the same gear ratio, it's going to feel nice and light and mean you can get a bit more explosive power out of it if you run 175's. You get the same decent amount of power, but at the same time it doesn't feel too light, which 18:13 usually seems to.

Unrelated, but I went through your town/past your house with Ali 2 nights ago...

I'd say it does, yeah. I mean, some people can just get on any bike and ride it however, but some other people notice changes in their setup more. If it's only 5mm you'll probably notice a bit of a difference but then just not really notice it after a while (Feels weird as hell at first 'cos of the way your legs have to move in a different sized circle). If it's a change from 158's/160's/165's you'll 100% feel it.

At the end of the day, with something like cranks, it should be reasonably easy to swap a set of 175's for 170's if needs be. It shouldn't really come to that if you do plump for 175's just 'cos it IS something you can get used to pretty easily, so it's not going to make your bike feel particularly bad or anything should you happen to not get on with it. It's definitely more of a help than a hinderance in any case.
