Did make me cringe + a bit.I think he never intended to win it, think of the backlash if he swindled £175K off a casino. The guy was always going to get his 5K back and not a penny more. Derren knew which number it would land on and just picked a number next to it, still made it look pretty impressive. (probably more beleivable than getting the actual number too)Im a big Derren fan, but was dubious about that overall setup, I think the Casino looked a little bit like a setup. You need to give your branch like 24 hours notice to make such a big withdrawl) but yes, that guy you're talking about is also a coomplete retard who I wanted to throw off that overpass. Also while I think about it I find it odd that on a major dual carriageway, where most drivers would be doing 75mph+ the chosen cars were doing ~50mph in the outside lane. I don't care how 'good' Derren is live, this entire series has been a huge pile of complete shite. Which makes me think he's a pathetic sellout and as such I have no inclination to see him live or watch any of his drivel again... fail! Captain Scarlet Posted October 7, 2009 Report Share Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) I think Derren is a brilliant performer and showman, I understand that you take all of this in a sceptical nature Dave but he is merely performing his feats in such a way to maximise effect.In Derren's books he states that he doesn't want to be just a mentalist, so therefore incorporates magic (and therefore the bullshit patter that follows) to maximise the potential reaction of the effect. (See Absolute Magic)Yes, to a learned man like yourself, of course the triangulation method of calculating speed is bullshit, it is just how Derren chooses to present it. It would be a completely different effect if he just said; "Yea I'm gonna guess the speed of that car!".He does this with every effect he performs, from this series, to his older Mind Control stuff. In his book "Tricks of the Mind" he starts off teaching you a basic coin vanish, as most magic books would teach you, then he breaks down the trick and pretty much gives you the perspective of a spectator, so he adds various subtle extras to make the trick more; logical, natural and of course more believable for the spectator, which then naturally can determine how amazing the audience see the trick. In this case he takes a normal boring coin vanish, and spices it up into believable work of art. Just the way he talks and the words he uses can influence the spectator that the trick is more magical than what it actually is.If you want to slate any other performer, move onto someone like David Blaine, his presentation is gash, it's pretty much; "Hey do you wanna see a trick?, here I take this card, I wave and it vanishes!". Plus all the homeless crazies he seems to choose to perform to!My problem with Derren is that he tries to make it sound like he's telling you how he's going to do it and that it's all totally real when he's quite clearly lying through his teeth. Everything about the casino thing just pissed me off something chronic. If you just use camera tricks, actors and stooges or whatever it's completely pointless.
