Carter
thinking of building my first MOD possibly the GU ST - but can't seem to find many opinions though. I'm 6 foot (14st) - the wheelbase is 1010 will it be too small for me? Also any opinions on the strength/any problems, the ride etc? Any advice or thoughts please Also a separate question: - any thoughts/ opinions of the the Truvativ Howitzer Holzfeller Trials cranks (isis)? I'm thinking of using them on my Pitbull or even this new Mod. Thanks Edited August 29, 2009 by Carter

Thanks 1010 is fine for your size i reckon, maybe a lil small but certainly ridable. The cranks are okay on stock, but i wouldn't even consider using them on a mod..... Carter
thanks AlexI have some other noob questions - can someone explain:whether I need a freewheel? Am i right in thinking that if the rear hub doesnt have a freewheel then i must get one on the cranks(?) if so which BB and cranks should i get (I was considering either a Truvativ 128mm Isis one with Gu cranks and a White industries freewheel?, or maybe a Try-all one with the same)What Fork would people recommend? I was thinking a GU 20" for discsDo I need a chain tensioning device or devices? I'm not sure whether I need snail cams? (Which ones?) or a derailleur like thing? (Which one?)Headset - any recomendations I know King are usually 1st choice for road & MTb but not sure if the same applies for Trials or if theres another one to consider?brakes - Im planning on trying a new pair of Hayes HFX9s I have - do you think they will work ok or I have some Avid BB4 (cable) or Saints, should I bite the bullet and get someHope Mono Trials?Any recomendations on stems and bars (bearing in mind Im 6ft 1" !) Alex Dark
thanks AlexI have some other noob questions - can someone explain:whether I need a freewheel? Am i right in thinking that if the rear hub doesnt have a freewheel then i must get one on the cranks(?) if so which BB and cranks should i get (I was considering either a Truvativ 128mm Isis one with Gu cranks and a White industries freewheel?, or maybe a Try-all one with the same) yes, if the rear hub is fixed you'll need a front freewheel. If you're running a bashring, then id stay clear of the truv gigapipe bottom brackets as i had clearance issues with my set-up, instead id look at the trialtech ( light version? ) or fsa bb. For cranks id recommend echo cnc'd or try-all. With a tensile or WI freewheels, the new echo freewheels are looking quite promising \at this stage as well. What Fork would people recommend? I was thinking a GU 20" for discs Erm for front disc I'd say the viz forks ( got a pair, brilliant and very strong ) or some echo lites ( got some of these as well, very light and very popular for a good reason Do I need a chain tensioning device or devices? I'm not sure whether I need snail cams? (Which ones?) or a derailleur like thing? (Which one?) On a 20" ( barring that b*****d atomz stod /mock ) you'll either be using snail-cams or an ib-built frame tensioner, but for the gu youll need cams. I use Zhi cams.Headset - any recomendations I know King are usually 1st choice for road & MTb but not sure if the same applies for Trials or if theres another one to consider? Kings aren't all that amazing for trials apparently because the top wedge can deform when used for trials, this making the headset loose. I use a tensile ace, very high quality headset with reasonable weight. For something a bit more reasonably priced, the fsa pig is ideal, strong as hell but quite heavy.brakes - Im planning on trying a new pair of Hayes HFX9s I have - do you think they will work ok or I have some Avid BB4 (cable) or Saints, should I bite the bullet and get someHope Mono Trials? Hayes are not good for trials...they're not popular for a reason, they don;t seem to offer the bite and hold us trials riders need. Are you sure you're not referring to Avid bb5s? never heard of bb4's tis all. Shimano saints area a bit of an unknown quantity, i know bigman used a servowave lx lever with some success.Hope mono trials are extremely good, so either these or some or magura Louise ( dependable fairly cheap stoppers, although apparently quite wooden lever feel? )bb7s, but most people will say the mono trial.Any recomendations on stems and bars (bearing in mind Im 6ft 1" !)Erm, Id recommend monty ti risers/viz pro 720 or possibly trialtech bars..unsure which stem as i dont ride mod properly, however i use a t-master stem, although most people will tell you this is far too high

Carter
Thanks for the replies guys much appreciated, I went for the ViZ fork in the end, headset will probably be a hope because I 'm shallow and want a gold one but not sure if the King is tough enough for my 190lb! Alex sorry I didn't see your frame and brake until too late, otherwise id have taken that, anyway I will put pictures up once its built
