Frustraiting Trials Problem

Hi all,

I have a rather embaresing problem (for a trials rider).

The thing is i find i have a real lack of balance on my trialbike. I ride a lot of motorcycle trials and find much better balance on that and my mountain bike, than my monty. I cant really keep the bike still. I just have to keep hopping around to keep balance. I can trackstand on a slight incline but on flat i struggle. Does any other noob suffer with this and is there anything i can do about it?

Its making me ride less because it seams as if im not improving because of it.

My balance has always been lackluster. It's my belief that balance can be learned through patience and practice.

Trackstanding on flat is pretty tough for just about everyone when they start out.

Concentrate on keeping your movements small rather than on the balancing part. Let your brain learn to handle that without you having to actively think about balance all the time. Another thing that helps me (especially with trackstands, is to focus on an object in front of me, like a mark or pebble or something like that, then I just let my legs and hips relax and do what they need to to keep me upright.

Edit: (Oh and another thing that made a difference (may or may not apply for you depending). I had a cheap FFW that had maybe 30 engagement points. Once I replaced it with a better one with double the clicks, it made a huge difference as I hardly had to lean into the pdeals to get them to click into place. I don't know if that really makes sense, but hope you get what I mean).

Hope that helps you out. It will get better quickly if you keep at it and stay loose.

It is rather difficult in some cases to find a way of balancing kinda smoothly, I find that if you like a trackstand let you bike roll backwards and forwards it feels and looks a lot better then hopping about.

Oh and don't forget on the motorbike you have 4 inch tyres at 3 psi and lots of weight to keep you planted.

Balance is a thing that comes over time. Don't expect much straight for the beginning, I've been riding trials for quite a while now and i still think my balance is crap. So you just need to ride and you'll feel how the balance is coming to you. Keep on going. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I fully agree with what tappets said. I was out on my beta last night and i poped the front wheel onto the side of a wall and just balanced there. I could have stayed there for hours whilst looking at a nobble on the front tyre, but as soon as i looked away i struggled to keep upright.

Thanks guys

It's just down to practice Max, when I started I'd already been riding motorbike trials for 2 years and it still took me about 2 years of bike trials to feel confident.

Helps motorbike trials a lot though, I can trackstand my TY with the engine off now. :P

Don't forget the gyroscopic effect the engine has on balance (it helps the bike to self balance) keep it up you'll get it.
