RobinJI
It really is worth looking into the metro's, you can pick up a decent MOT'd metro for sub £300, then get hold of a solid cam 1.8l k-series out of a freelander/400 ect for bugger all, as everyone wants the VVC's. Slap the 1.8 in the metro and spend a few hours with a hacksaw and a hydrogas pump and you've got a rapid little car. The engine's a strait swap, and the suspension's just a case of chopping down the trumpets to lower it, then pumping the pressure back up to more than standard to stiffen it. Would cost bugger all, and they go much better than everyone expects.
minitrialer
I'm going to put in another vote for mk2 golf gtis, and also the clio 16 valvers. Similar weight to golfs and similar power, unsure what they are like to work on though. Parts and bigger engines etc and fairly easy to find and not too expensive. Or you could get a base model golf/clio and chuck a bigger engine in, same as the metro idea above.Ps I've got a soft spot for xr2's as well, so upload some photos if you do get one! I think same applies with engines and easy parts as well. All three cars fairly light and I personally think good fun ! Pashley26
I tell you what you could do, buy a Scirocco and an old BMW and put the engine and rear axle into the Scirocco. That would be easy as f**k !
